Heather Graham is a very likeable central character, putting her all into this. A little wooden, but still trying, James Purefoy plays her husband, and together they visit a secluded fertility retreat (although the film never succeeds in making it actually feel secluded). Miraculously, the treatment works and soon the happy couple are expecting, but it's clearly hinted at that sinister forces are at work. A strange container is involved in the fertility process, and a man in a hoodie keeps hanging around and occasionally attacking people...
The film clearly wants to be 'Rosemary's Baby' meets 'The Omen', but never rises to either film's heights of tension. The plot behind it all is horrendously muddled and it's never made clear quite what the bad guys are up to (or even quite who they're worshipping). It's also barely hinted at - everyone is so nice and concerned for the couple that you never get any feeling of building tension. Almost nothing else happens for the main running time of the film - the couple get pregnant, they move in, the wife walks around a bit and glimpses a guy in a hoodie. Even what was clearly supposed to be the group corrupting Purefoy by helping him live his dreams is bungled, as you never get a feeling of evil influence or power, just an everyday feeling of connections and influence helping him out. The tension of the main ending is bungled, with it lacking impact. I felt the film should have started an hour later than it did, and carried on after the birth, as its only here (with a slightly bungled CGI sequence) that things start to really get interesting and the plot could have grown wings. But by then the film's ending.
A missed opportunity.
