Product Description

CD Description

* Randy Newman was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2002. When asked how he would like his plaque displayed, he replied, "Carole King and Stevie Wonder on either side. And Irving Berlin above."

* It's a different story these days but in the years preceding his breakthrough as a performer in the mid-1970s the songs Newman wrote were recorded in the main by other artists.

* Our 2008 collection "On Vine Street" (CDCHD 1186) comprised material drawn from that formative first decade of his career. The positive response the CD received suggested a second volume was warranted. Fortunately, he wrote enough songs during those hungry years to make one possible.

* Some acts - Nilsson, Harpers Bizarre, the Fleetwoods, Alan Price, Irma Thomas, his early songwriting partner Jackie DeShannon - are inextricably linked with Newman and make return appearances on "Bless You California".

* The Fleetwoods' 'Ask Him If He's Got A Friend For Me', one of Randy's earliest recorded compositions, makes its debut CD appearance here, as do the tracks by Martin Denny, Johnny Shepard, Dick Lory (Dick Glasser), Peggy March, We Talkies, the Epics and Connie Stevens.

Usual quality release from 'Ace'. However, I didn't enjoy it as much as the first volume. This has the same type of ecletic, eccentric, offbeat tracks that make the first volume work well but i feel that the tracks aren't as strong. Obviously some of the artists are world famous but the compilation just does'nt click for me. Saying that, there are a couple of standout tracks - 'Leave me alone' Peggy March, 'She'll never understand' Connie Stevens is another, my favourite track and the reason i bought the cd is the wonderful 'Sedaka-esque' 'I Got Over You' by Dick Lory (a truly excellent track). A fair compilation that could grow on me over time, especially the Duffy Power track.

Great set for the curious Newman Fan. 7 April 2011

If you're looking at this review, chances are you are more than a casual Newman Fan. This is a good catch-all collection (as is the companion piece On Vine Street: The Early Songs of Randy Newman" ) of songs Randy penned for others before he was truly recognized as a performer. Most of these show Randy attempting something similar to the sound of the era, albeit with a decidedly Newman-esque bit of irony thrown in. Not all are perfect renderings, as some are delivered without a hint of irony and some of the arrangements seem forced into the trends of the era. That said, there is a lot to like here. Lou Rawls' version of "Let's Burn Down The Cornfield" is particularly effective. If you're curious enough to read this review, buy this. You'll likely find some "new" gems for your regular rotation, and more Newman, in any form, is always welcome.
