Format: Audio CD
This collection marks 10 years since Warpmart, the internet merchandising arm of Warp, rebranded as Bleep. Bleep has subsequently gone on to be a first-stop website for fans of electronic and leftfield music, as well as an occasional record label itself. "Bleep 10" now serves as a showcase for some of the website's biggest selling artists, not just those signed to Warp. Containing 14 "new and unreleased gems" it is maybe ironic that this release feels and sounds more like an early Warp compilation than a compilation of current Warp Records' artists would. That said, there aren't too many bleeps on here...

Of the featured artists, I have come across exactly 50% of these myself before. Old-hand Wolfgang Voigt's Gas gets us underway with "Die Wand" - a Basic Channel-ish number. Along the way, we are treated to a varied and relatively accessible (even the Autechre track is, for them, quite listener-friendly) selection: from ambient to experimental to ravey, but this is no exercise in nostalgia. This is a forward-looking and positive record - as it says on the (digipack) sleeve - "Bring on the next ten years..." Bleep certainly seem to have served Warp well in making the transition from hard copy, to soft copy, marketing and it's good to see that this is a challenge they appear to relish as any futuristic record label should. It's a fine line sometimes between old skool and harping on about how good things were in the old days. Bleep stay on the right side of that line.

What the bleep 14 May 2014

Compilations are more often hit-or-miss with me in my experience of music collecting. While Warp Records has assembled successful collections from their roster before (such as the 20th Anniversary celebration CDs a few years back) this one suffers from being more underwhelming than exciting. Many of the artists represented that are new to my ears do not entice me to explore their catalog any further based on what they have contributed here, while the ones with name recognition do not add anything essential to their body of work. F*** Buttons offers one of the CD's standouts with something raucous and lively, while Machinedrum's "Aeolia" has a nice late-90's Squarepusher vibe to it. Most other tracks will need more time to sink in, if they ever do.
