What happens when a killer becomes the target. . . ?

Product Description

The death of a journalist from a single bullet to the heart makes for a dramatic story - but the twist in the tale is that this time, it's the man who fired the gun who's asking all the questions…

The assassin, Michael Weston, knows he has carried out his assignment successfully. One mistake was enough, a long time ago, when a young girl had accidentally received the fatal bullet. Her father hired a PI named Hoffer to track him down. Every time Weston completed a job, Hoffer was not far behind. But why had the police been on the scene so quickly? Weston has to find out - even if it means coming face to face with Hoffer...

Story told very well for the majority of the book, just gets a bit so-so nearing the end, when some characters are eliminated from the story - it makes it [relatively] easy [in hindsight?] to guess the ending. Overall, well worth a read - but Rebus as a character is close to unbeatable; therefore Weston/West fails to live up to Rankins normal fare.

I wish they'd kept this as a "Jack Harvey" novel. To me, it seems to dilute the Rankin-Rebus series, which is probably the best thriller series about at the moment. This, in truth, is a pretty average thriller. I wouldn't recommend it if it wasn't written by the usually brilliant Rankin. Read this and by comparison you'll see just how brilliant a creation John Rebus really is. How could you compare this to something like The Falls? You can't. So ...

... My recommendations for 2001: 1. THE FALLS by Ian Rankin 2. POWER OF ATTORNEY by Dexter Dias 3. MY NAME IS RED by Orhan Pamuk

This is a gratuitously violent, unevenly plotted book with poor character development and an almost maniacal fixation on guns and weapons (make, model, and year).

The novels by the same author that feature Inspector Rebus are great. This is such a disappointment.

Keep to Edinburgh, keep with Jack Harvey
The book starts off as deep as any Jack Harvey tale. For the first half you believe the transition to London from Edinburgh is working, with darker shades of police corruption,... Read more

Good, but not his best
And why do I say that?

Because Ian Rankin is the man who's given us such novels as The Falls, and in my opinion, he is much better doing what he did there than what he's doing... Read more
