Product Description

THE DOWLING POOLE is a new band formed by singer-songwriters and multi-instrumentalists Willie Dowling (ex-Honeycrack/Jackdaw4) and Jon Poole (ex-Cardiacs). Dowling and Poole first met in 2011 when recording and producing Ginger Wildheart's award winning, top-ten '555%' album, and it was mutual admiration at first sight. "I was immediately taken by Jon's remarkable and diverse musical talent," says Dowling, "but it took me an age to pluck up the courage to phone him and ask whether he'd like to do something together." Fortunately, Poole had been thinking along the same lines and was equally thrilled at the prospect of working with Dowling. They started writing songs and locked themselves away in Dowling's recording studio in France for a few months, writing and recording an album they have titled 'Bleak Strategies'. Influenced by pop masters such as XTC, Blur, 10CC, The Kinks, The Beatles and more, The Dowling Poole debut album is an eclectic and contemporary sounding mix of semi-psychedelic pop, somehow quintessentially British-sounding, laced with harmonies and a multitude of influences from the best of 50 years of rock and popular music. "It was a very collaborative process," says Poole, "We both brought songs to the table and we performed, sang and produced them together. You'd be hard pressed to guess who wrote what since we both were adding ideas left right and centre to each other's work.

From the moment I heard of this bands inception, I was quite literally giddy as a kipper. As a long term fan of both Willie Dowling (Jackdaw4 one of my favourite bands) and Jon Poole (Cardiacs/God Damn Whores) this combination of both singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalists was set to be a musical dream team.

This debut album does not disappoint. An eclectic mix of styles from pop-rock, rock n' roll, psychodellic...classic Britiish music at it's best. Fans of Jackdaw4 should know what to expect. So many harmonies and Beach Boys esque melodies thrown in a bag with some White Album Beatles and a little Amphetamine.

Catchy as all hell. I cannot recommend highly enough!

Bleak Strategies, the debut album from the musical genius of Willie Dowling combined with the er...musical genius....of Jon Poole, ticks every single box. The songs are catchy, the lyrics are clever, the harmonies magnificent. Once played it's unlikely you'll feel like listening to anything else for a very long time - simply, it's musical perfection in one stunning album.

It's stunning.......beautiful, progtastic, psychedelic pop tunes that whisk you through the 60's and 70's in a haze of flowers and free love, then moving via deLorean into the 80's and 90's with melodic, poptastic shoulder pads and acid :-D
Or something like that :-D XX

When the first 10 minutes of this sublime CD assumed a musical stance that entered somewhere between Jellyfish and the Beatles and then proceeded to spit out musical and lyrical references as diverse as Neil Innes, XTC & The Who I knew I was in for a good time. When they then decided to wrap the whole confection up in a series of harmonies worthy of Queen or The Association I new that I had died and gone to heaven. Absolutely brilliant. Well done Chaps!
