Product Description

Product Description

Welcome to a collection of dark and moody short fiction - twenty-five stories, from 200 words to nearly 2000, to entertain you in winter.
There's no comedy. There's no romance. There's spooky goings-on, there's some nasty goings-on, and there's some very peculiar characters. And, I'm afraid, there's some death. Quite a lot of death, actually.
I hope you enjoy them.

More About the Author

Gerald Hornsby was born in leafy Solihull, England, and spent a good deal of his life running away from writing, instead pursuing a career in engineering. However, in his late 40s, he had run out of excuses not to write, so began a hobby which turned into a part-time obsession.
His first attempts at writing short stories were poor, and attempts to improve his literary fiction writing resulted in yet more poor work. Only when he made the transition into genre fiction did he actually understand where his passion lay. He enjoyed frightening his readers, making them think, and making them worry about his characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great e book for that plane /train journey . 10 April 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A great e book for that plane/train journey or even just for days when you don't feel like getting involved in a whole novel. Firstly I have to say that I don't like e books. I suffer from floaters in my eyes , that gather like a blockade when I try to concentrate on the story and focus on a screen. (Bad enough when reading a paper book or typing on a PC or IPad ) I have tried all sorts, dimming the light, enlarging the writing to no avail, so consequently I rarely buy novels for the Kindle app on the IPad. I carry my iPad everywhere, it's slim and fits in my handbag, unlike the books I read! The idea came to me one week, after I had carried around a book I didn't get to read more than a few chapters of, that maybe I could download short stories to kindle app. It would be something I could dip in and out of, especially on journeys, wouldn't need too much concentration and and no extra bulk to carry. This kindle book was one of the couple of downloads I tried out. I'm glad I downloaded them , they have opened up a whole new world to me, not to mention keeping my bag lighter. On the strength of reading this e book of Gerald's I have downloaded Bleak midwinter Tales 2 . The stories are quirky, spooky, twist in the tale, dark and light... No time to be bored with samey tales ... Definitely better than the 'popular' women's story mags on the market... There is nothing twee about Gerald Hornsbys writing. I look forward to reading more of his work.

5.0 out of 5 stars A grower 27 Jan 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I bought this ebook on the recommendation of a friend and I wasn't sure about it at first. I felt a bit lost at the stories being left hanging and not being able to "get to know" the characters. A few tales in however, I was used to the format and was hooked. I have now bought the second ebook which is equally good. I would highly recommend it but with the warning that you need to give it a chance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great stories 21 Jan 2011
By Claire
Format:Kindle Edition
I loved the stories in this book, all different and interesting. I like the short stories as you can just read one quickly if you are waiting for something, or don't have much time.

I think my favourite is the story of the guy going for a skydive!

I am going to get the next book and am looking forward to reading some more.
