I have a confession; although I'm a Scot, I've never been that keen on bagpipe music. Indeed, I have a lot of sympathy with Noel Coward's definition of a gentleman as one who can play the bagpipes, but doesn't.
This album, however, is great.
The Red Hot Chilli Pipers are clearly crazy, but in the nicest possible way. They have thumbed their noses at the po' faced piping establishment and produce bagpipe music which is quite simply fun. The Chillis are at their best live, so whilst their other albums are good this is the best.
There are parallels with Hayseed Dixie, in that the Chillis produce bagpipe versions of rock classics like "Smoke on the Water".
This band reflects all that is best in modern Scotland. They are rooted in tradition, but not afraid of embracing the new. Best of all they don't take themselves too seriously and are always up for a laugh.
