Product Description

Product Description

Author: John Ackroyd. The writer is a design engineer extraordinaire, has been a key man in a mad mix of land speed and long distance balloon record attempts, including the first supersonic land speed record. This book gives a fantastic insight into the frustrations, tragedies and triumphs of record breaking. It describes battles against the odds, the whims of the weather, the constraints of time and money and the often strange intervention of fate. Project Thrust, Virgin Atlantic, Pacific and global balloons, Earthwinds, Thrust SSC, Spirit of America, rocket motorcycle, rocket dragster, wheel-driven record breakers and waterspeed attempts are all here. The story is told by the man who provided solutions, innovations, design and real problem solving which were major contributions to the record breaking achievements on land, sea and air in the last quarter of the 20th Century. The book is lavishly illustrated in full colour. With 288 pages.

If you have anything more than a passing interest in the endevours of individuals to push themselves beyond where man has gone before; buy this book !

This is the story of a modest man who has been behind some of the most famous adventurers and record breakers of the 20th century.
He knows the stories, the hardships and the challenges because he was there, making things work !

A great read and some fantastic photographs too !

5.0 out of 5 stars Jet Blast, 19 May 2008
By Thomas S. Mackie - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Jet Blast and the Hand of Fate (Hardcover)
I was fortunate to have met John Ackroyd and talked with him about his ballooning adventures. He is a real adventurer of the likes of Steve Fosset who he had built balloons for to fly around the world.
The book is very large and makes a nice coffee table addition.
