Book Description

3 Jan 2013

Published to coincide with the star-filled BBC production of Blandings, this superb new anthology sees these celebrated stories together for the first time.

Set in the delightfully dysfunctional mess of Blandings Castle these 6 gems follow the trials of poor Earl Emsworth and his beloved pig Empress as they clash with a panoply of friends and family, servants and spongers, bookies and hucksters. And all served up with great lashings of comedy from that rarest of geniuses: P.G. Wodehouse.

More About the Author

The author of almost a hundred books and the creator of Jeeves, Blandings Castle, Psmith, Ukridge, Uncle Fred and Mr Mulliner, P.G. Wodehouse was born in 1881 and educated at Dulwich College. After two years with the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank he became a full-time writer, contributing to a variety of periodicals including Punch and the Globe. He married in 1914. As well as his novels and short stories, he wrote lyrics for musical comedies with Guy Bolton and Jerome Kern, and at one stage had five musicals running simultaneously on Broadway. His time in Hollywood also provided much source material for fiction. At the age of 93, in the New Year's Honours List of 1975, he received a long-overdue knighthood, only to die on St Valentine's Day some 45 days later.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blandings Castle, Shropshire 4 Jan 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Welcome to Blandings Castle, Shropshire, in this edition of stories to coincide with the forthcoming tv series. This book contains five short stories, Pig Hoo-o-o-o-ey!, Lord Emsworth and the Girl, Company for Gertrude, The Go-Getter, and Crime Wave at Blandings, as well as the full length novel Problems With Drink, which I believe was originally called Galahad at Blandings.

Clarence, Lord Emsworth, ninth Earl of Emsworth, wants nothing more than a quiet life. Peace and tranquility in his home with nothing more to worry about than his pig, Empress of Blandings, and Lord Emsworth would be in Paradise. Of course life conspires to make things a bit more boisterous. Having to put up with his sister Constance in the home isn't something that is ideal, and especially when his sow is off her food, there are troubles with romances, and an airgun causes untold temptations. Of course once he has got the overbearing Constance out of his hair he returns to find that his sister Hermione has taken up residence, with her family.

Entering another period of bothersome-ness perhaps Galahad, Gally, as he is affectionately called may be able to help. There are romantic troubles in the air, especially as Hermione is after Clarence to re-kindle a romance with an old flame. Something is always happening at Blandings, and poor Lord Emsworth is always finding himself put upon. That is why I have always found the Blandings stories so entertaining. We all would like some peace and quiet, to put our feet up and relax, but like Lord Emsworth, sometimes we just seem to be thrown in at the deep end.

All the Blandings tales, like the Jeeves and Wooster ones are always well worth reading, and this book makes an ideal introduction especially to those who have never read them before, or only a couple. This kindle edition also has a fully active table of contents, so you can find your way around this e-book with ease.

While specifically faithful to the writings of Wodehouse this is a superbly well penned script with hilarity the centre of its intentions! Well worth every penny!
