Book Description

1 Sep 2010 The Parasol Protectorate (Book 3)

Quitting her husband's house and moving back in with her horrible family, Lady Maccon becomes the scandal of the London season. Queen Victoria dismisses her from the Shadow Council and the only person who can explain anything, Lord Akeldama, unexpectedly leaves town. To top it all, Alexia is attacked by homicidal mechanical ladybugs, indicating, as only ladybugs can, the fact that all the London vampires are now very much interested in seeing Alexia quite thoroughly dead.

While Lord Maccon elects to get progressively more inebriated and Professor Lyall desperately tries to hold the Woolsey werewolf pack together, Alexia flees England for Italy in search of the mysterious Templars. Only they know enough about the preternatural to explain her increasingly inconvenient condition, but they may be worse than the vampires - and they're armed with pesto.

4.0 out of 5 stars Blameless indeed! 2 Sep 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This was a great finish to the series, with plenty of ends left untied - the mark of an author who values her readers' own imaginations and intelligence... and who may be planning another series.

The idiom is not quite The Thing at times (not quite English - too much yelling and hollering and so on), but there is much wit in the speech, action, pacy plotting and background, which can well be compared to Lindsey Davis (Falco novels). I've laughed aloud at times in this Parasol series.

The plotting and development of this world is extremely well done, and is bound to engender a lot of fanfiction; it would certainly be suited to the equivalent of the Harry Potter Lexicon.

Extremely appealing characters, too.

4.0 out of 5 stars The appeal of high-tea and parasols 27 Sep 2010
By Teddy
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
A worthy third book in the series.

I devoured it, despite the higher number of irritating Americanisms that have crept in (the reason I droped one star in my rating if this book), and it has left me impatient for the next in the series.

Alexia is back with an 'infant inconvenience', an inebriated absent husband, some murderous vampires and a group of mechanical ladybird assassins. This novel continues straight after its prequel Changeless and launches itself straight into the action. Alexia has become exiled from her husband due to his doubts over the paternity of her unborn child, while he proceeds to beome the drunkest werewolf in England she immediately becomes the most scandalous woman in London. Turned out of the family home, unable to return to Lord Maccon, Alexia finds herself in the company of her remaining friends, the ever faithful valet Floote and hat shop inventor Madame Lefoux. With their help our heroine travels to Italy in search of information as to how her pregnant state is possible, sadly that knowledge must be extracted from the Templar Knights - and they aren't too keen on soulless women.

This is the third novel in Carriger's Parasol Protectorate series and her characters have all hit their stride. Alexia is as feisty, stubborn, endangered and resourceful as ever. An excellent all round heroine. Her supporting characters are always a main source of comedy, wit and extreme etiquette; in particular Floote and Professor Lyall are my favourites. Both valet and werewolf Beta have the perfect combination of put upon servant and smart know it all.

Carriger's novels are perfect for those readers looking for something a little different in their fantasy genre. Their mixture of adventure, steampunk, alternative history, romance and action makes them unputdownable (if such a term exists). Im already looking forward to the next novel Heartless.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great book in an amazing series 31 Aug 2010

Delightfully unique and highly entertaining.

Being sent away by her husband Lord Macoon because he thinks that Alexia was unfaithful is the start of a series of annoying and dangerous events. Not only that being pregnant is weird and inconvenient, once again someone is trying to kill her. Alexia decides that traveling to Italy is the best way to deal with the situation. Together with Foote and Madame Lefoux she goes on a journey to Florence. On her way she meets a crazy professor, evil Templars and discovers her love for pesto.
Will Alexia be able to learn more about her mysterious pregnancy and will her husband finally come to his senses and start adoring her again?

Gail Carriger has the ability to capture my interest completly. As soon as I started with "Blameless" I wanted to go on and on.
Reading about Alexia, Conall and the other characters is always a pure joy. The way Alexia dealt with her pregnancy made me laugh out loud several times, the pragmatic approach with which she handled the situation fits to what I previously learned about her.
I adore the wit and eloquence Gail Carriger uses to tell her stories. Every sentence of this book was a joy to read and I never wanted to rush through a part. Carriger has created a world full of entertaining and delightfully unique characters that fascinate me. I realized that some things I wouldn't like in other books work perfectly in "Blameless", I guess the way this book is written makes everything possible.
I could go on and on with praising this book however I can't do justice to Gail Carriger's work. I think that reading her books is the only way to truly realize how unique, entertaining and fascinating they are.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blameless? Faultless 21 Sep 2010
By Mrs W
Format:Paperback
Having read Soulless, I couldn't wait to get my hands on the Changeless and Blameless. If you like your books to paint you a picture of your character and their setting, you may be disappointed because these books require you to have an imagination. And therein lies the joy, just enough for you to add in the detail. Brilliant plots, populated with characters you can't help but like - even the awful ones! Alexia is blunt, forthright and recognises her own faults. It would take a supernatural to be more blunt, forthright and flawed, and husband Conall is that and more (or less). The plot motors along at her usual breakneck speed, doing improbable things in improbable ways. My first Steampunk (?) novels, I found the technological aspect easy to follow, and amusing. As a fantasy fan, I was pleased to see the Werewolves come out on top, and delightfully most of the vampires are rather unpleasant (and not one is moping after a teenage girl - a plus in my book and this one!) You can't actually trust Carriger to end the book on a happy, loved up note, so be prepared! She keeps you on your toes right up until the end. There are enough threads left over to knit together for the next book (just a shame its ages till its published). I also loved that each booked carried on from the other, with no gaps, it felt as though the 3 books were written as one and then split. I look forward to more offerings from Ms Carriger.
