Well it has been so long; I loved this album as I loved Kevin Coyne. I had bought "Marlene" as a single because Kevin was supporting (label mates)Gong on tour and I had a ticket.
Nothing was ever as mesmeric as Kevin was that night and soon after I was ordering "Blame It On The Night" at my local record store (Cavendish House)purely on the strength of NME/MM reviews and what I had seen at that gig.

Nothing quite prepares you for this record no matter what you read or hear about it; even the record company doesn't hear what I hear.

"River of Sin" opens it with a swing followed by the brooding "Sign Of The Times"; A respite in "I believe in Love" (touted as a single - no chance)before "Don't Delude Me" gives a clue as what side 2 holds.

It opens with the title track which even now I sing during any thunder and lightning and it is followed by the pit disaster that is "Poor Swine".
"Little light" is darker still while "Choose" again gives you a little rest before "Witch".

Nothing I can say can describe "Witch"; it just chills your very soul.
Hope is given with "Right On Her Side" which closes the album.

There are those who will tell you Kevin's best work was Marjory Razorblade, or Matching Hands and Feet or Black and White but they are all wrong.
Blame it on the Night is by far his best work.
Just don't expect an easy listen.

This is fantastic album that has been very hard to find, only ever available on vinyl (poorly pressed in a delicate sleeve at that) for a short time. The original album it is essential for anyone who likes Kevin Coyne. The bonus tracks are all good to excellent too, though a few are derived from less than perfect sources & not all from the same period, but very welcome all the same. At the price you should get the whole album: the musical standard is definitely not "fans only" grade. Kevin really was on form in those days. Can we have this on CD or FLAC please??

These days barely a week goes by when a classic and rare album from the 60s/70s isnt reissued in some format or other. This one has been a long time coming though, and is the first issue on cd as far as i know. Essential listening and Cherry Red have done a marvellous job on it. Disc one contains the original album versions of the songs plus a b-side, an alternative version and 2 live tracks from Hyde Park in 1974. Absolutely brilliant, hard to top and an excellent follow up to Marjory Razorblade, stand out tracks including River of Sin, Sign of the Times, the title track and Witch.

Alternatively titled River of Sin, Cd 2 consists of rough mixes of the album tracks which are as good as the originals, the stripped down sound and looseness of the recordings perhaps suiting the songs even better. Appended to the original album tracks are an alternative mix and 2 out-takes from the album. An absolutely splendid package, recommended to newcomers and Kevin Coyne enthusiasts alike.

Even better, Amazons current auto-rip version, free with the purchase of the cd, features a cd2 which is totally different to the cd2 that comes with the set. It features a number of BBC recordings, John Peel and Bob Harris sessions and live tracks from a BBC concert in Golders Green 1974. Buy it new from Amazon and get 3 cds worth of material for around a tenner. Cant be bad!

I have known this album since its original release in 1974. This re-mastered release is briliant. It is like meeting a valued old friend who has been rejuvenated in heart and soul.
