5.0 out of 5 stars A true and remarkable continuation! 8 July 2012
Format:Paperback
What a great work these "new" authors (Van Hamme, Yves Sente) and illustrators (Ted Benoit, André Juillard, ao.) have given us with these new albums of the adventures of Blake & Mortimer. We are of course dealing with some of the most gifted writers/illustrators of today, famous for many great series such as Thorgal, Skarbek etc.) and one could maybe be afraid that this just would turn out be an opportunity to commercialise a legendary (but discontinued) album serial, but on the contrary.

This is born out the deepest respect and love for the work and all these new albums are marvellous - it is like the serial never stopped. And one thing I really admire is that they have stepped into the present day in their way of presenting the stories, but still kept true to its original concept and atmosphere. I'm marvelled how they can come up with these new great stories, what an imagination and insight.

My personal favourites in the new serial so far, is the first three albums: The Francis Blake Affair, The Voronov Plot and The Strange Encounter, but I think that all the new albums from these great writers are superb. I for one, am exited to see if they will leave out their primary, and always present villain Olrik, in some of the next coming albums, that would be a nice change. The only album, in the original serial, who didn't have Olrik in it was "The devilish Trap" (title freely translated from its French title - this album is unfortunately not translated to English), so it was actually done before.

So in short - what a truly wonderful and most welcoming idea, to continue these great classics, in such a high standard of quality - BRAVO!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but not great 3 Dec 2011
Format:Paperback
One of the later books by Blake and Mortimer (originally released in French in 2000 by the team of Yves Sente and Andre Juilliard), is pleasant and entertaining, though it does not reach the level of the classic volumes by E.P. Jacobs. Our heroes this time has to stop their nemesis Olrik along with an evil Soviet scientist (the Voronov of the title) from using a lethal virus that was launched in a Soviet rocket to kill the world's most prominent leaders. The artwork by Sente is fine; is the plot written by Juilliard than I find a bit wanting. Set right before the launching of Sputnik in 1957 (a rare instance where a Blake and Mortimer volume is dated), it lacks the fantastic element of previous Blake and Mortimer volumes and at the same time has some unbelievable twists: for example, in one case, Blake is able to get inside the Lubianka using a fake moustache in order to rescue a prisoner (a homage to Tintin in the Land of the Soviets?). It is a good Cold War adventure, but it could have been better (by the way, if one wishes to read a graphic novel that deals more realistically with the birth of the Soviet space program, I would recommend Laika by Nick Abadzis). Finally, the album includes at the end some good informative material on how the book was made.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great one from Cinebook 30 Oct 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
The latest translation in the Blake and Mortimer series, this is the first one by Yves Sente & André Juillard to be published in English. The style is recognisably different but still fits in with the rest of the books. A few oddities in translation - the characters even though they are supposed to be English use a lot of American slang and phrases and words like "gotten" but although this is annoying it doesn't detract from the overall quality of this series. Really looking forward to the next one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cold war antics at their best! 5 Nov 2012
By Kaps
Format:Paperback
Plot is full of double-dealing double-agents, risky transactions, surreptitious phone-calls and plots-within-plots. Very well written and illustrated B&M adventure reminiscent of the cold war movies. A must read in the B&M series...

3.0 out of 5 stars Moderately good 19 Dec 2010
Format:Paperback
As you may know Edgar P. Jacobs was an assistant to Tintin author Herge and the Blake & Mortimer books are in a very similar style. Unfortunately they are not as good as Tintin. Out of the eight books published by Cinebook so far the best are the five written by Jacobs himself, particularly S.O.S. Meteors and The Affair Of The Necklace. This book is a cold war story with Voronov, a Soviet scientist, plotting to start a war with the West in order to replace the new progressive Russian government with hard line Stalinists, helped by Olrik, who appears in almost every adventure. Towards the end of the book Olrik escapes in a rather improbable way when is he handed over to the Russians in exchange for a captured spy working for Britain. The exchange took place on a bridge over the Elba. Instead of being taken to the Russians in handcuffs he was sent to walk across the bridge and immediately escaped by jumping into the river. Similarly when a Russian general, who presumably had hundreds of men under his command, was ordered to arrest the extremely dangerous and evil Voronov, he not only went alone and unarmed to the scientist's laboratory but allowed Voronov's subordinates to direct him through a special side door and met a gruesome end. It is explained in the book that the backgrounds are often light and empty in order to bring the characters into sharper relief. This might be a good idea but it is taken too far. S.O.S. Meteors, The Affair Of The Necklace and The Yellow "M" had more artistic backgrounds and better stories.
