3.0 out of 5 stars See where you can land!, 13 Jul 2008

A very amusing indoor toy for anyone who likes gadgetry. Computer gamers may grasp the delicate controls easier than people who've never used joypads before but it isn't rocket science. It does drift and plenty of room is advised, like in a hall/community centre/etc because it reaches a brilliant height to play around with.

Fly it with as little hazards (furniture/ornaments) around as possible as it's tendancy to sometimes drift and delicate controls will cause crashes. If it does crash, LET GO IMMEDIATELY of the controls so as not to damage the rotors!!

Once you get the hang of it, the Bladerunner II is good fun to use and you can be really clever and practice landing on things.

Would NOT recommend to children (or adults!) with an impatient streak or quick-temper.

4.0 out of 5 stars Now you too can be Stringfellow Hawke, 17 May 2008

Durability:2.0 out of 5 stars Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars Educational:2.0 out of 5 stars
The Bladerunner II r/c helicopter is an indoor helicopter, approximately 16 inches long, with a foam (see polystyrene) body and plastic blades. One motor controls the dual counter-rotating blades, while a small blade at the rear aids manoeuvring. The whole thing weighs less than 50 grams and feels a little flimsy, so careful use (both in flight and when landing) is advised.

The Bladerunner comes with a radio transmitter that doubles as the charging station for the helicopter's on-board battery - plug the helicopter into the radio and the radio into the mains to get the whole lot ready for flight. Charging takes around 30 minutes but this unfortunately gives you only a few minutes' flight time. The makers were probably limited to how big a battery they could put in the helicopter due to the power restrictions of the motor, but the usage time is pretty good for such a small aircraft. The battery does unfortunately seem to run down just as you start to get to grips with the controls, so be prepared to re-charge frequently if you use it a lot.

As anyone who knows about r/c helicopters will tell you, flying the things is a tricky and sometimes frustrating adventure. The Bladerunner is almost certainly one of the easiest both to get to grips with and to master, but you will crash into things at first so don't expect to be brilliant from the off. Practice makes perfect, however, and a steady hand and cool head will go a long way - members of the PlayStation generation will probably pick it up in no time. The blades are joined by a metal ring that I at first thought was there to aid flight; several crashes later and I realised that it was actually to protect both the blades and anyone or anything you might hit into.

Aerodynamically the Bladerunner is pretty good, although it does have a tendency to drift one way or the other, even after you've adjusted the trims. It's also easy for a gust of wind to push it off course, so outside flying on anything other than a windless day is not recommended. It can't fly quickly in any direction but is perfect for pottering around the living room, especially if the ability to take-off and land vertically is something that will amuse you.

The Bladerunner is a fun and entertaining gadget that will undoubtedly elicit smiles from anyone who sees it. It probably won't get a huge amount of use, but if you use it carefully and don't expect too much from it then for the price it is pretty good value. Perfect as a stocking-filler or as something for the man who has everything.
