The thirteenth book in the needlecraft mystery series sees owner of Crewel World and amateur sleuth, Betsy Devonshire, taking on a case that may possibly involve witchcraft.
It's Halloween in Excelsior, Minnesota and after the town drunk is found dead in a room seemingly locked from the inside, talk turns to suspicion and the finger is pointed at local Wicca practitioner, Leona. There had been no good word spoken between her and the deceased and he had long suspected that she'd been putting a curse on him. Christian Betsy doesn't believe in witchcraft- but there's no denying that the circumstances of the death just don't add up...
A good mystery but not one of my favourites of the series- maybe as it felt a bit stilted and clichéd in places when talking about hexes and spells and there was a bit too much emphasis placed on Christianity and witchcraft (I'm an atheist) for my liking. Nevertheless, I do love this cosy mystery series and I was pleased to see Goddy and the Monday Bunch back in full force- gossipy Irene also made a reappearance. Returning to these cosy mystery books is like pulling on a pair of cosy slippers and there's something so reassuring about reading about these familiar characters who by now you feel you genuinely do know.
I wouldn't hesitate in recommending this cosy mystery series and you don't have to be a needlework fan to enjoy them either, but I would recommend starting them right at the beginning- just to get a feel for who is who!
