Product Description

Review

"Although primarily intended to prepare police officers for the sergeants' and inspectors' promotion examinations, these books have been highly acclaimed by an even wider section of the market, including legal practitioners and academics. All of these books maintain exemplary standards of presentation, accuracy and clarity, and the volume under review is no exception." "The next edition of this book will be subject to very substantial changes, due particularly to the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act 2005 There can be no doubt that all this will be handled with the characteristic skill displayed in previous editions." "Fortunately, there are publications like Blackstone's Police Manuals that are an important lifeline in helping to keep many people afloat in the wake of all these reforms. This book is therefore highly recommended to all those who need a clear and comprehensive knowledge of general police duties." (Leonard Jason-Lloyd Internet Law Book Reviews )

Product Description

Blackstone's Police Manuals are the leading police reference texts in the UK. In addition to being the only official study guides for the police promotion examinations in England and Wales, and a recognised text for police probationers, the Manuals have quickly established themselves as the definitive reference source for all who are involved in police law and procedure. Endorsed by the CENTREX for OSPRE® Part 1 Promotion Examinations, the Manuals have been written in consultation with police forces across England and Wales. Blackstone's Police Manual Volume 4: General Police Duties 2006, covers all aspects of General Police Duties from a police officer's perspective. The 2006 edition has been extensively revised to incorporate all recent legislative developments and a number of case decisions and changes in policy including: the Prevention of Terrorism Act 2005, the Hunting Act 2004, the Fire and Rescue Services Act 2004, the Civil Contingencies Act 2004, the Licensing Act 2003, the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005 and the Domestic Violence, Crime and Victims Act 2004. Topical areas examined in detail also include: updates to the National Policing Plan and further provisions of the Police Reform Act 2002, Community Support Officers and accredited employees, the recording of stop and search powers, further provisions of the extended fixed penalty system, and racially aggravated offences, equality and diversity. The Manuals are widely used in the professional development of police officers in a variety of roles, making them essential reading for anyone with an interest in police and criminal law. Whether you are a serving police officer or police trainer, a practitioner, advisor or researcher, Blackstone's Police Manuals 2005 are an essential purchase. The other three titles in this series are: Volume 1: Crime 2006; Volume 2: Evidence and Procedure 2006; and Volume 3: Road s Policing 2006.

A good comprehensive source of law and case law for those working in the Police service. And an essential read for those studying part 1 ospre exams! The books are well laid out and quite comprehensive and should form the foundation of an revision or studying programme within the police.
My only critiscm of the books are when studying for an exam they can get quite hard going. I would prefer to see a `crammer' style summary section where pertinent case law and pints are recapped and explained. Though I do understand you can by separate crammers to this end I feel their inclusion would help a reader make more sense as they progress through the books.
I have had both the 2006 and 2009 editions and my review is the same for both. Albeit the only real changes have been updated legislation.

When studyin for the exam these books are ideally complimented by the online Q&A form Blackstone's and personally I would not use the Q&A books as online provide instant feedback with reference to the learning points and an explanation , track stats and trends etc

good for reference 20 July 2001
Format:Paperback
This book is a good up to date reference guide for general police duties. The text perfectly displays legislation and includes points to consider. Also incorporated is reference to the Human Rights Act 1998, a very touched upon subject nowadays.
