FOR THE POLICE MCQ PROMOTION EXAMS
An appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green Chambers
Reading this series of Blackstone's 4 `Question and Answer' books for the first time made us realize that they certainly offer a superior coverage of the topics examined for the Sergeants' and Inspectors' Part 1 promotion examinations, and in just the right way for the worried candidate.
Compiled by serving police officers, Huw Smart and John Watson, each of the 4 Q&As offers sound advice right at the beginning on how to approach a Multiple Choice Question (MCQs) and the way in which it may be answered. Correct answers, and an explanation as to the reasons for the correct answers, are also given together with a useful checklist at the back of the book once you have gone through the individual chapters.
Each book should be read in conjunction with the Blackstone's Police Manuals for 2012 (also in 4 volumes). In our view they are cheap at the price and offer the best revision toolkits around for these types of examination. Do read the introduction which dispels the myths about MCQs. Whether MCQs are, actually, `a reliable, valid and fair test of knowledge and understanding across a wide range of subject matter' still remains a matter for debate in some academic quarters.
However, MCQs are here to stay so Smart and Watson have risen to the challenge and produced 4 fine Q&A books which shadow the four Blackstone Manuals covering the following: Volume 1 on "Crime", Volume 2 on "Evidence and Procedure", Volume 3 on "Road Policing" and Volume 4 on "General Police Duties".
In our view, these revision materials balance law and practice well, and are a great investment - better than anything else we have seen. Oxford University Press and Blackstone have made police exam revision all that much easier!
