Product Description

Synopsis

This title offers the new Inspector Sam Blackstone mystery. It is July 1900. Sam Blackstone has only gone to New York to pick up a prisoner, but he soon finds himself drafted in to investigate the murder of Inspector O'Brien, a man famed for rooting out police corruption. Working with Alex Meade, an enthusiastic young detective who worshipped O'Brien, Blackstone scours the depths - and the heights - of the city in search of the killer. And the more he searches, the more he becomes convinced that the police department doesn't really want the murder to be solved.

Blackstone and the New World is the latest Sally Spencer novel.I only started reading the Blackstone novels because Sally Spencer's (Alan Rustage) other hero Charlie Woodend had retired to Spain. The Blackstone novels? Well they couldn't be as good as the Woodend series now could they? Oh yes they can - and are. Normally I shy away from certain categories of novels, one category is: if they are set in a foreign country, and another is if they are in any way historical! Blackstone and the New World should have lost out on both counts, but it didn't. It's a well written book, with a deft and fast moving plot. For the most part, the characters are engaging - even the crooks. It's educational also; I discovered things about America which I didn't previously know. It's also well researched, I checked and discovered that the facts are correct.
Briefly the plot concerns our hero, travelling to the US to bring a criminal back to justice in the UK. While there Blackstone "looses" the criminal and becomes engaged in the investigation of a policeman's murder. He has to fight to maintain the law and becomes involved in several unsavoury characters, not all of whom are officially criminals. If you liked the Woodend books, I guarantee you'll like the Blackstone series. Well recommended, buy and enjoy.
