This is the first novel I have read by Campbell Armstrong. I have just bought The Surgeon's daughter and look forward to reading it. It is refreshing to read something that grips you and you can't put it down. Certaintly a name I will be looking out for in the future.

Armstrong's readers might be disappointed with this entry, but for me he's done something he hasn't taken on before, and that is a thorough examination of a man who makes one really terrifying mistake in a life that has been exemplary, and how the consequences of this misjudgement accumulate. Okay, there's suspense, but nothing in the way of explosions and people detonating and characters running all over the world, just a serious, relentlessly entertaining tale of a man swamped by a moral dilemma of his own making. Read it.

All the familiar Armstrong trademarks are here - a spectacular beginning, fast-paced narrative and intriguing characters. What makes this a little disappointing in comparison with his previous works is that about two thirds of the way through, it becomes rather obvious in what direction the plot is heading and you're left waiting for some twist in events that never materialises. The somewhat misogynistic violence (although infrequent) may prove a bit distasteful to some readers also. Probably Armstrong's weakest book to date, but it is a recommended read all the same.
