Biography

Since their debut on a small Norwegian acoustic jazz label in 2001, Shining has moved on to become one of the most hard-hitting, genre-pushing bands of our generation. Their determination to create new sounds and cross boundaries has only been further stepped up with their latest ear-crushing achievement, to be set free in 2010; a synchronized launch of attacks of a sci-fi drone military ... 5.0 out of 5 stars Mental! 12 Mar 2010
By Peter G
Format:Audio CD
I thought I should review this album as nobody has yet. This is one of the heaviest, fastest, craziest albums I have heard in a long long time. Saxophone solos, distorted guitars and odd song structure makes this one of the freshest things in the metal scene I have heard in a good while. It still remains a good listen despite all the of its metal stylings. Basically this growling monolith of an album needs to be heard to be believed so go and buy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Black Math 19 May 2010
Format:Audio CD
This is the second album i've heard by Shining, the other being grindstone.

Blackjazz has a slightly 'simpler' sound than grindstone,
there are less samples, and the sound is more instrument based.
Shining obviously come from a scandinavian metal background and
this is more obvious on Blackjazz than Grindstone.

Of course claiming that Blackjazz is a stripped back album for Shining
is slightly ridiculous, they still sound like a a room full of lunatics.
Parts of it are jawdroppingly awsome, albums dont get much more exciting
than this, the punishing rythmn and sparse distorted vocals are fantastic
I whole hearted recommend this album, this is a group that deserve some
praise for cultivating such a unique off-kilter style, also it has to be
said, that mental as this album is it's not difficult to get into, the rythmn
and drums are enough to keep things accessible (ish).

Shinings music is full of unique character, it has an insane genius to it,
and the album artwork is phenomenal to, just look at that type!

5.0 out of 5 stars Album of 2010 12 Jan 2011
Format:Audio CD
I brought this ablum on an off chance to be honest.

But the moment it kicks off is like a whirlwind of industrial, jazz, black metal & even techno. In the future ALL albums should follow its path. It is fearless not worried about where it treads, penning its faith on the listening to come join the darkest rollercoaster of music every created.

2010 throw up some great albums, but nothing has me coming back to it again & again, always hearing something fresh with each spin. The cover of King Crimson at the end is a nice touch. But the standout moment is BLACKJAZZ DEATHTRANCE, perfect show of how complex & creative this band is. From the bombardment of drum rolls, ultra-doom riffs, riffs spiralling out of control & then comes the techno section.

Pure Genius all should own this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Industrialjazz more than Blackjazz 8 Dec 2010
By Peter T
Format:Audio CD
This is an innovative album with quite a few inspired moments of mixing jazz and metal. Its very heavy.

The name of the album suggests that the music might be black metal mixed with jazz. In truth, it sounds more like Ministry mixed with Jazz. The vocals sometimes reminded me of Error E.P. by Error.

Jazz metal is known for using jazz orchestration rather than instruments (e.g. Atheist - check out the latest album). In Blackjazz you have both and it works really well. More brass in metal please. Maybe it could be called 'brass metal' ho ho.

The only downside is that it does go on a bit in parts and could have done with some 'editing'. It is not an easy album to listen to, even by industrial metal standards.

5.0 out of 5 stars What on earth...? 22 Mar 2010
By Austin Tacious - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Have you ever wondered, like me, what it would be like to be strapped tight into a cold steel chair while a naked 17-year old virgin beauty spits goat's blood into your face and then rubs it off with wire-wool?

Well, listening to this album must come pretty close. Sexy, exhilarating, painful and grotesque.

Sort of what you'd get if you collided metal, techno, jazz and noise beneath several hundred acres of farmland in Geneva at just below the speed of light for the hell of it. Cool. It ain't gonna cure any diseases either.

If you like this, you have GOT to get Zu's Carboniferous.

Guaranteed to push even the most patient of neighbours to within an inch of putting a bounty on your head.

4.0 out of 5 stars The bar has been raised. 15 April 2010

Holy Hell! The bar has officially been raised for innovative avant garde black metal. If you like Solefald,Sleepytime Gorilla Museum and Sigh, then you should check this band out. If Van Der Graaf Generator took some acid, stayed up for a week listening to black metal cd's, this is what they would produce. Strap yourself in! Blackjazz is a perfect descriptive. By the way, 21st Century Schizoid Man is an insane new rendition of the classic King Crimson song.

4.0 out of 5 stars In Your Face Industrial Prog Metal 8 July 2011
By MrSavoie2U - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This cd is a forceful, unrelenting attack of loud, often fast, industrial prog black metal. Not for the faint of heart or those expecting something like Rammstein or Nine Inch Nails. It's much more aggressive and really blasts out of the speakers. Highly recommended to those with a more experimental taste. Highlights include pretty much the entire cd, except the cover of King Crimson's 21st Century Schitzoid Man. As a big fan of the original, I have hard appreciating such a brutal version.
5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible record! 9 Feb 2013

Blackjazz, by avant-metal/jazz lunatics Shining, is definitely not for everyone, but if you like mind and genre bending heavy music produced by talented and furiously inventive crazy people, it is one hell of a record
5.0 out of 5 stars Rockin' good blackdeathjazzmetal 7 Oct 2012

This album is very good. I am very happy with my decision to purchase this album. The music on this album is heavy and not a little bit crazy. If you like, say, Tomahawk, you may well like Shining's Blackjazz, too.
