Product Description

Product Description

Blackheath, in the heart of the Black Country, only came into existence in the 1830s, as a variety of industries grew up in the area. Many of the people who lived here were quarrymen, miners and nailmakers. Life was not glamorous here: abject poverty was almost universal, and privation that is unknown and unimaginable today was commonplace. Despite or perhaps because of this, a strong sense of community has existed here since earliest times. Anthony Page's new book draws on previously unpublished photographs from a variety of sources, including family albums, to chronicle Blackheath's streets, people, industry and events.

About the Author

Anthony Page has lived in the Black Country all his life, and after taking early retirement has been much in demand as a lecturer on local history subjects. He is author of two volumes of Blackheath in Old Photographs and two of Rowley in Old Photographs.

Another excellent selection of photographs of Blackheath by Anthony Page. This book, in addition to his previous books of Blackheath and Rowley, will be of interest to local residents, historians or anyone with family history connections to the Blackheath area. If you have been a resident of Blackheath you will be reminded by these pictures of how it used to be or may even recognise people, or yourself, in some of the group photographs of football teams, school, chapel, choir, drama groups, works outings etc.

Thank you Amazon, I had been searching for this edition for two years. Although not new, it was in excellent condition, and I will certainly buy other items from this source.
