BLACKENED BLUE EYES is a fantastic song by The Charlatans, a band whose important and outstanding contribution to music has ensured their legendary status.
Infectious to the ear that encourages repeated listenings, it has a driving piano accompaniment, pounding drums, waling guitar that together with angelic vocals from Tim Burgess, make it a trademark Charlatans sound that hooks you in and doesnt let go from start to finish.
With its distinctive groove and melodic sound, that does bear welcome similarities to classics such as Over Rising and Tremelo Song, it is safe to say that Blackened Blue Eyes is one of The Charlatans more prominant tracks, right up there with their very best.
Certainly it is an extremely well written song with some superb lyrics that showcases that darker, gritty aspect to The Charlatans which is always just bubbling below the surface, gaining exposure in songs such as this one.
Without a doubt, The Charlatans continue to excel, doing what they do, as always, to the best of their abilities, consistently sounding fresh and inventive.
Further evidence of this is exemplified in the b-sides that accompany the two single cd releases.
' Arise Arise ', ' Cry Cry Cry ' and ' Don't You Worry ' indeed are great Charlatans tracks themselves where of the three, ' Arise Arise ' is the more prominant. Indeed, this brooding rocker dips and soars majestically and happily swills around in your head and thankfully doesnt dissapate too readily. Never was a truer word said than it could have been a single itself!
