Product Description

Product Description

Conceived in the 1950s as a replacement for the Supermarine Scimitar, the Blackburn Buccaneer went into service with the Royal Navy as its main carrier-borne nuclear strike aircraft. But with a diminishing role to play in world affairs, and a reduction in the number of aircraft carriers, the Navy disposed of its Buccaneers to the RAF, where they went on to become one of the Force's most successful and best-loved aircraft. This complete history of the Buccaneer takes the reader from first proposals and the original production S.1 to the final fling of the type as a laser target aircraft during the first Gulf War.

About the Author

Kev Darling spent more than twenty years in the Royal Air Force, engineering aircraft ranging in size from the Tiger Moth to the TriStar. Medically discharged after the first Gulf War he strengthened his writing career, which he had begun in 1986.

A good book, fitting the format of the Crowood series, with the usual expected quality and loads of detailed pictures. The detail history per individual aircraft in the main body of the book is not something I appreciate, and the fact the author is not consistent and sometimes details in groups aircraft but then sometimes reverts to individual aircraft histories causes a bit of frustration - this material would be much better as an appendix and the general points of interest should appear as a collective history narative for the S1, S2 and RAF S2 aircraft groupings. Due to this it can feel like the author is padding our the book, but apart from this the content is good and easy to read. Value is average if you have to pay full RRP, but if you can get this at a discount it is a good book to have on what is a classic aircraft.

Good volume on a airframe little known in the U.S. 18 Dec 2011

Mr. Darling did a good job on covering the Buccaneer. I would like to have seen what he could have produced given a larger format than what is normal for Crowood.
