4.0 out of 5 stars A must for the Blackberry real keyboard fans 29 April 2013
By Mike K
After having the phone for a few days I found my way around the new hardware and software without any major headaches after upgrading from a Blackberry Torch. The great news is it's much faster and hasn't been prone to the lock ups that plagued my old phone. The main immediate difference to anyone used to the older Blackberries is the lack of trackpad, something those of us who have been with the bberry since the side wheel have got used to. The touchscreen is very responsive and they have obviously put a lot of time and research into the new navigation system which is a familiar selection of app icons along with direct access to the 'hub' which gives access to emails and social media updates. Facebook, Twitter, Skype and LinkedIn are all supplied with phone with WhatsApp available to download.

The ringing and other alerts don't seem quite as adaptable as on the old Blackberry and it took me a while to find a mode that just rings for the phone and vibrates for text. It's all there but not as easy to sort out as you might expect.

I like the Blackberry Link software, it's intuitive and make transferring data from the old phone easy. Please note it will not transfer email addresses and passwords, the instructions advise setting all these up before using the Link software to transfer all the other data. Pleasingly all my saved wi-fi profiles came across without issues.

It's also worth noting these new generation Blackberries do not use 'Blackberry Services' ie your emails do not go through a Blackberry server and now arrive and go in a similar way to laptops, iPhones and iPads. This makes a difference when choosing a data plan as emails will count as data and not Blackberry services.

5.0 out of 5 stars Keyboard and Touch Screen in Harmony 18 Feb. 2014
By PhilT
Verified Purchase
Up until 5 years ago I'd stuck rigidly with normal keyboard phone from the mainstream suppliers. Then I bought a BB Bold 9700 and could see instantly why it was the businessman's tool of choice. Its handling of email and business apps was brilliant. Unfortunately I made the change to an iPhone and missed the simple to use mail clients and more importantly the tactile brilliance of a BB keyboard. After looking at all the reviews of this and its sisters Z10 and Z30 the Q10 offered me everything I loved about my Bold 9700 and the use of a touch screen to replace the track pad. To that end if like me you are not wooed by the latest shiny app offering then this is the phone for you. The messaging hub is brilliant, easy to set up and instantly re-configurable to show whichever mail/social media/business comms tools that you use. There is a growing list of BB10 apps and there is a runtime module for Android apps. What more could you want?

If you want a smart phone that prioritises communication over using apps, playing games and watching movies then this is the one for you. But it also does the other stuff and there are now enough apps to satisfy you too. The Q10 is a blazingly fast, efficient micro computer in your pocket with the full QWERTY keyboard that is its crowning glory.

This year, I explored my wife's Iphone 5 for hours trying to understand what is so great about it, but I failed because it felt more about form than function and also it tied you into the Apple ecosystem way too much. Then, for a time, I really enjoyed my excellent Sony Xperia Acro S (an imported early stable-mate of the Xperia Z that runs Android jelly Bean) but despite being typically Sony excellent for multimedia and Android friendly open to developers, I felt frustrated by it's power hungry and un-intuitive interface. Coming back to Blackberry's Q10 after these and my previous Bold 9900 and 8900, I have been blown away for lots of reasons. BlackBerry has come a long way and is back:

1. It does what any modern smart phone should do in terms of web browsing, multimedia and utilities and it does them well enough on its relatively small (but only 0.4 of an inch smaller that the Iphone 3 to 4s, which everyone thought was huge on release) but much more vibrant 3.1 inch screen. However, it absolutely excels at being a brilliant phone, email client (as you'd expect from BB), organiser and social networking device.

2. You can probably forget serious gaming as this is more of a business tool but there are lots of excellent games for 'commuter gamers' with fewer demands.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it! 20 May 2013
By J.wms
I do hate it when people compare blackberry phones to iPhones and android handsets! The blackberry is in a category of its own. You love it or hate it. I have an iphone 5, htc one and a galaxy note 2 at the time of writing (long story) however my blackberry is always the handset I never leave home without. I had the bold 9900 and upgraded to the z10. I didn't like it. For me blackberry is all about the physical keyboard. When the q10 appeared I just knew I would love it, and I do.
I purchased it in white from carphonewarehouse as amazon not stocked it just yet. I honestly love it. Yes it is most definitely a giant leap in software terms away from the bold, but give it a few days and you will see how advanced the software is. We all hate change right but this is going to be the way forward from blackberry so I guess it's best to embrace change rather than fight it. The keyboard is amazing. You will love it. The screen is fabulous too. One point. Don't change font size to above 9 as if you do then you can't see what you are texting beyond line 3! I am sure blackberry will sort this out shortly.
So if in doubt, buy. Give it a few days trial, then see how invaluable a device it becomes. Honest.
