DVD Description

This is the true story of Edward Teach, who went on to become the most notorious pirate the world has ever known. Loved by some, hated by many, feared by everyone, his reign of terror along the east coast of America and rash decision to strike at the heart of the government drove the authorities to put an end to piracy once and for all... Based on the stories of Blackbeard and other pirates who lived at that time, this immersive, beautifully shot drama reconstructs in vivid detail a larger-than-life man and the fascinating historical period in which he lived. A gripping tale of skullduggery, heroism, cunning and revenge!

ahoy ship mates!!! 26 Feb 2010
This is 1 of,if not the best pirate movie i have ever had the pleasure to sit through. For those that dont already know Blackbeard was a real person and pirate who lived back in the 1700, I have been studying up on the real blackbeard for a couple of years now and was please that this movie is as historically accurate as it could be based on the information that i have read. Also there seems to have been alot of effort put into the design of the sets, props and costumes which to me all had a realistic feel for the time in which the film is set. Also all of the acting is solid all of the way through!. James purefoy shines perfectly in the title role of Edward Teach/Blackbeard. Mr Purefoy seems to have embodied Blackbeard inside and out based on what i have read on the man himself and what has been recorded throughout history,he made me feel as if i was watching the real life Blackbeard on screen and not just someone acting him out!. In my opinion Mr Purefoy did an excellent job of bringing this legendary and infamous man to life!. If you are a fan of pirates, Mr Purefoy or just old Mr Blackbeard himself then this is defintely 1 for you!.

Not 100% accurate but the most to hit the screen!
Just wish they'd release the Ty Unwin score :-(
If your a fan of either Pirates/Blackbeard or Mr Purefoy, Stop reading & buy!
Also this version is 32 mins longer than the U. S. version!

Gaaarrrrrrr! 30 July 2007
Ultimately disappointing. The production values are excellent, the acting solid and it has a wonderful feel for it's time and place of setting. The script puts a very human face on the legend of blackbeard. But where it lets itself down is in the scripts reliance on the narration of the character of Israel hands.

This results in the film becoming a series of vignettes linked by clunking great grinding chunks of expositional monologue. Even worse is the use of these monologues to patronisingly define and explain terms and points of history. Were the screenwriters simply not able to tell us a story?
Instead of an intelligent, great period drama (which British television has been rightly famous for)we get something that has the flavour of one of those made-for-schools history programmes.
