This camera works well as a front and rear camera there are a couple of flaws, however the authorized sellers and manufacture are great at contacting you about any problem.

First is the memory card cover. You need to remove the power wait until it's off then remove the rear camera connector. (These cables are easily damaged), then the cover flips up and you can remove the memory card. You can however transfer footage to you apple or android phone or tablet via the wifi built into the camera but you will need to sit in the car for a few minutes while you find and transfer the footage. Much easier on your PC or Mac.

Second is the actual quality of the video. This hopefully will be improved when the camera has an update. There are massive pixels (square blocky areas) on the video in some conditions. This is due to a low bitrate transfer of 6 Mbps most HD recorders use at least 10. Custom firmware software should be available in the near future from certain websites.

Third the firmware as of November 2013 has a bug that fixes it to British summertime uk no matter what country you set it to again firmware will be soon coming out to fix the problem.

The camera works perfectly well 95% of the time only bit rate and the time problems are a concern.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent image - minor gripes only 21 Oct 2013

It took me two goes to get a working one – the rear camera kept dropping out on the first copy, but it was worth the wait, and support from the vendor – “smart tv guy uk” was excellent.
The front camera image is excellent; the rear camera is lower res (still 720p) and has visible compression artefacts, but still more than good enough for what it needs to do – there is no problem reading a number plate on anything that gets close enough to be of concern. The Android app is passable but has annoying deficiencies – like never remembering your password. I would have liked a manual “lock” button, but that’s it for gripes.

I have had this kit installed for a while now and so far so good.

Good bits:

1: Using the recommend firmware from the amazon supplier - I have had zero problems.
2: The front camera is outstanding quality and the rear camera is quite good. (1080 vs 720 basically)
3: Connecting via WiFi is just brilliant and so useful. No need to take memory card out as you can copy video to your phone.
4: Must be installed with Power Controller and it will stay on when parked which is also awesome.
5: It handles dark conditions brilliantly and has a good contrast ratio. Car lights at night don't kill the image and sun in the day is no problem. Good CCD!
6: Easy to use and it talks to you - so you know its working.

Bad bits:

1: You can't get it to connect to a WiFi router - so its device to device only. When phone is connected to this WiFi its technically not on the web. No offloading to FTP automatically or remote 3G access :( Not that it was ever suppose to support this but it would have been nice.
2: The front camera is a little bigger than expected. It might have been nicer to have the smaller camera size with the recorder hidden away as a separate unit. Maybe I am too fussy.
3: When installed in the car - it is obvious from the outside and could attract someone to steal it. I have used black electrical tape to cover all the shiny silver trim and its far more discreet now. Passable.

Tip: If installing in a BMW use a "FUSE TAP" (to grab power from fuse box without voiding the cars warranty) using the Home Link fuse connector.

I did have one weird thing happen. When installing the rear camera - there was something with the rear video link cable that caused the front camera to die.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great hardware. Flakey software. 4 May 2014
By Trevor

The camera is just fine and dandy and works a treat. The software is less so.

The Blackvue software is not of the best quality. The problem is getting it to work 'properly' on certain versions of Android. It worked first time on my Nexus 10 running Android 4.4 but got the dreaded and well documented 'Weak Wi-Fi signal' on my Galaxy S111 running Android 4.3.

WIFI PROBLEM
Checking the signal strength on my N10 whilst sitting in the driver's seat, I got a -35dbm signal (a really strong level as you might expect). Testing the connection by walking away from the car, I still got a live picture at least 100ft away, so the problem with my S111 was not actually a weak signal so must be something else.

After a lot of Googling around, I found that the problem on my S111 was not the Blackvue software at all, but with the Wi-Fi implementation in Android 4.3 (and possibly other versions).
Android 4.3 has been written to be 'clever enough' to detect whether the selected Wi-Fi signal has internet access and if not, it disables the connection and looks for one that has. Whilst this is happening, the connection to the camera stays up long enough to be able to list the files on the camera before it drops out and prevents further downloads from the camera with the 'Weak signal' error message until the connection is re-established. It's not actually a 'Weak signal' but it's no signal because Android has dropped the connection.

FIX
The fix for this is ,as others have indicated, is to remove the automatic internet search done by android so that the phone will stay connected to a network without internet access.
