I have to admit that I had never tried this type of sand bag training before so I thought I would give it a go. I don't consider myself to be a fitness fanatic but I do like to stay in shape and going to the gym can get a little bit repetitive after a while.
The bags and sand bags are very well made and seem very durable, if a little bit overpriced in comparison to some comparable products or even some simple home gym equipment.
Having tried them out for a month or so I have to say that I am not convinced by the effectiveness of the whole process. I have tried quite a wide range of exercises with the bag, with one sand bag filled, but generally found the bag to be quite cumbersome.
I don't think I will be sticking with this regime unfortunately.

At one level, this is an incredibly simple product. It is an extremely robust large holdall sized bag into which one can put bags (provided)filled with as much or as little sand as you like.

The bag has plenty of external handles which means it can be handled in many differet ways and use to exercise different muscle groups. It can be therefore be used to do many of the exercises one would do with a conventional set of weights.

Where it wins out is in the ungainliness of the weight and thefact that one can alllow the weight to shift around inside the bag. This makes it feel much more like the same kind of muscle loading experienced when playing contact sport. It feels like better training for a rugnby forward playing in the loose.

its a bit pricey, but its a well made, innovative bit of kit.

The blackPack PRO is fundamentally a very simple idea: a robust container into which you can add as much or as little weight as you like (within the suggested range of 5kg to 40kg.).

The weight is supplied by adding sand into the heavy-duty loading bags, three of which come supplied. The aerobis web site recommends you use dry quartz sand, which you can pick up at your local B & Q for around a fiver for 25 liters (which conveniently weighs almost exactly 40kg). I would avoid cheaper sharp sand as, even though the bags look pretty tough, abrasive grit could ultimately damage them I suppose.

Anyway, stack the bag or bags into the blackPack and you're ready to go. The aerobis web site http://www.aerobis.com/en/blackpack-pro has a couple of videos that give you a brief overview of how to use the blackPack. Judging from the second video - a couple of German guys dragging the blackPack around in a forest, it can stand up to a fair bit of rough treatment.

The secret is claimed to be in the inherent instability of both weight and form. This forces your muscles to work harder, as the inner bags shift and the blackPack flexes. So lifting 20kg in the blackPack is a lot more taxing and exercises more muscles than lifting 20kg on a barbell.

The build quality looks exceptional (well, what else do you expect from German engineering?) with straps, handles and stitching all appearing very tough and resilient.

Obviously the effectiveness of any sports training device can only be measured in medium to long-term results. Both my son and I will use the blackPack and I'll report back in a month or so.

Initial impressions are that this is a quality device which is going to be fun to train with and I was delighted to receive one through Amazon Vine.

This is an excellent bit of kit, let down only by the poor quality of the sandbag clips. The bag itself has very strong clips and a variety of useful handles, but the clips that secure the sandbags themselves have little to no durability. Within only a couple of weeks, two of my bags had broken clips, leaving only one with complete functionality. Disappointing, given the price.

Very good quality product that can take a jolly good shoeing. The design is well thought out however the area inside can make for excessive weight displacement during some lifts, so you're actually loading one side more (it does say this in the advertisement but still a bit of a shock). Easily sorted with putting a towel in to lessen the space. Only true bad note is the price

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
As others have noted, the blackPack PRO is fundamentally a very simple idea: a rucksack-like device that can be weighted with sand. You can 'configure' the way it's weighted, since there are individual bags that can be filled to whatever extent works for you. I've been using it on and off now for a while now (hence the late review), and I'm absolutely over the moon with it.

For me particularly it's really shown its worth when you're on holiday - if you can't go out to a gym, you can go out for a run, take it with you, do some exercises on the way, and you can pretty much cover all the bases of a traditional workout. In some ways it's harder, since actually lugging the thing around requires your muscles to work in different ways than just lifting a barbell straight up - the stresses are different, and as anyone will tell you forcing your muscles to do something different is always good (as long as you keep reasonably good form of course). You can go to the Aerobis web site [...] which shows you a good selection of videos of the unit in use, and you'll also find good examples on YouTube.

In terms of how well it's made, honestly, this thing is going to last longer than I am; it's exceedingly well made. I've found this to be a superb complement to regular gym use, and (as I say) for holidays it's worth it's weight in gold (or sand). I've lent it to two friends now who were off on beach holidays and didn't want two weeks away from the gym - both came back singing its praises, and one of them went and bought one.

If I had to be negative, it would come down to the price. Personally I was sent one by Amazon Vine (thanks Amazon!), but I can imagine many people would balk at the asking price. That's the only reason I've knocked off a star (and if I could give 4.5, I would).
