5.0 out of 5 stars Best Blackberry ever? 2 Nov 2011
By J. Potter TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
This review is split into two sections: A one paragraph overview for those not needing the finer details and a full blown, blow by blow account of the key features.

The quicky - In the Torch 9860 RIM have finally produced a Blackberry touchscreen device that allows for intuitive menu navigation and a touchscreen keyboard that does not make entering long emails daunting at all. There are a few tiny issues (covered below) but these are minuscule compared to the standard design blunders we have become used to from RIM. The Torch 9860 has a great camera, a vivid screen, is a dream to use and has battery life contemporary to other touchscreen smartphones. The touchscreen keyboard is a real standout and the best on ANY touch device I have used - making text entry as easy as it ever was on the legacy 'standard' Blackberry keyboards. The Torch 9860 is by far the best Blackberry I have used. It is the successful evolution of many products and comes very highly recommended for anyone who wants a touchscreen smartphone combined with the functionality of a Blackberry device.

Now onto the nuts and bolts.

Any statement like: 'Best Blackberry ever', needs context. I'll start with me. I have used Blackberrys extensively for years. I support them and those that use them. I test devices across all smartphone brands. Blackberrys are a large part of my communication and digital life. And I gotta say, these last two years RIM have frustrated the hell out of me. Mostly this has come from some bad design decisions. Anyone that uses a Blackberry (BB) knows there are three important factors: the screen, the keyboard and what you use to navigate the screen options. Key to all this, is the need to be able to type efficiently.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Touch Screen Phone 20 Dec 2011
By scottie
I once own a Black Berry Curve and at that time it was a good phone. i loved the key pad and most importantly staying in touch with my friends with BBM. Then when my upgrade was due I was scared to go fully on the touch screen.I use the 9800 torch and thought that's the phone because of both touch screen and key pads. Finally I was introduced to the 9860 torch . Great Touch!!!!!!!!!!!!! try it you will love it!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good phone, but..... 29 Feb 2012
This phone EATS battery, and I don't mean when you use it to the full extent either. I don't have BBM or internet because I bought the phone on pay as you go and inserted my contract sim in, so I only use text messaging and music. I send maybe 20/30 texts a day if that, and listen to maybe 10 songs on the way to university and back and in a day, maybe a day and a half the battery is gone i'm talking 10% or less. That's with minimal use and for most of the time it's in my pocket doing nothing.
That's my main issue, along with the auto-rotate which you don't seem to be able to turn off and also the keyboard. I have an iTouch and i'm used to the keyboard after typing a symbol switching back to letters, this does not. I know it's not apple, but it's a kinda handy option. Also occasionally I start typing a text and the first letter doesn't come out in a capital, and it takes two or three attempts of pressing the A button for the phone to realise I want a capital letter.

The camera is good, not amazing but if i'm out and about without my camera it would give me a decent shot. However the side button on the left below what is the volume buttons, you have to hold it in for 2-3 minutes for the camera to come up. It's quicker for me to access it from the main panel.

The panels on the main screen, All and Frequent set themselves up, but I have yet to figure out how to set up the other panels particularly the favourites panel there's not a lot of information given on the phone. I also don't like the fact that you can't move things out of folders, like the Memo app and Calculator are in a separate "Applications" folder, and I either move the folder or move nothing.

4.0 out of 5 stars All that glitters isn't gold! Updated 28 Oct 2011
By Ube63
The new torch is sleek, stylish and seriously good looking. I really want to like this phone............. BUT............ there are problems with it!

The old Blackberry battery issues have returned again! One charge can give me nearly 4 days minimal use and another charge will last me 4 1/2 HOURS with no use whatsoever except e-mails coming through! This really isn't acceptable since the same problems troubled the original Storm and Torch, I know, I've owned both of them and, yes, I close all apps, run it on 2G and turn the GPS off! Having had well over two years to remedy this Blackberry have failed abysmally! Update - I've now kept my phone on 2G and the battery has settled down now giving me 2 days moderate usage and 4 days light usage which is more than acceptable however when I change from 2G to 3G or back the battery drains very quickly (three to four hours from fully charged) until it gets its next charge when it goes back to normal! Weird or what?

My second real issue is that the new Torch doesn't support a lot of the apps that I had purchased for my old Torch. This is really annoying since a lot of the apps that I had were purchased rather than free and, although they are now saved away on Uninstalled Apps, in the App World (hopefully for future use) I can't run them on the new phone! I'm not sure whether this is because of the larger screen or whether it's the new operating system but it's a real pain!

On a more positive note the phone is an absolute delight to use! The new operating system is very intuitive and easy to use especially if you've used OS6. The camera, video recording, playback and sound are all excellent quality and the playback sound from the phone's speakers far exceeds the quality from my i-pod Touch's external speaker.
