4.0 out of 5 stars Madeline Black, Book One 17 Feb 2011
By Detra Fitch TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Madeline "Maddy" Black is an Agent of Death. An Agent is responsible for escorting the souls of the newly deceased to the afterlife. Agents are alive. They simply have some magical abilities and black wings which they keep tucked away. When an Agent dies, the next person in the Agent's bloodline is activated to duty. There is no choice, and there is no escape. Since being an Agent is a 24/7 job that did not help pay bills, Maddy rents out the bottom apartment of her flat in Chicago's west Lakeview neighborhood. The bottom apartment has been empty for quite some time now. So Maddy is happy when handsome Gabriel Angeloscuro agrees to rent it. The cranky, popcorn-loving gargoyle, Beezle, does not like the new tenant but can tell no reason as to why.

As soon as Gabriel moves in, demons appear on the front lawn and an unholy creature is rampaging around Chicago. Turns out that Gabriel is not exactly human. And Maddy begins instinctively using powers she never knew she possessed. With Gabriel's help, Maddy must quickly learn how to summon and control the unexpected manifestations of her new powers. This is even harder to do since no one seems to know how many new magical abilities are just waiting to pop out. Worse, Maddy learns that her powers are linked to a tainted family legacy.

**** FOUR STARS! A terrific beginning to an exciting new series involving life, afterlife, demons and an unusual woman stuck in the center of them all. Each time I thought I understood everything about Maddy's new powers, one of them would morph or another would suddenly appear - and with chaotic results. But it is Maddy's bloodline that blows my mind away. Unknown to her at first, Maddy has the most unique family tree ever.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great debut 2 Dec 2010
By Gareth Wilson - Falcata Times Blog TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Kindle Edition
I always love the opportunity to try and new author, so when Christina's title flitted across my vision I just had to give it a go. Death, as they say is a certainty, so I suppose it was only a matter of time before the embodiment took over the Urban Fantasy genre to such a degree that they'd give the vamps, Were's and witches as serious run for their money. Not that it's a bad thing but with so many titles featuring the reaper in all sort of incarnations each author has had to do something different to avoid being compared to the ones that have gone before.

Here in this title, Death takes the form of human agents with the blood of angels who take over the roll of certain fallen angels aiding humanity to pass onto the other side and whatever fate has in store. It's clever, the characters are cracking and to be honest the way that the story is woven really will lend the title up to multiple follow ups. Whilst many will concentrate on the romance of the characters within, the real star of the show for me, was a minor character, Beezle the Gargoyle. He's definitely the star and whilst many could end up wondering why, any author who lavishes that much time and love into a supporting cast member has taken a lot of care to create the other players.

All in, beautifully creative with some great prose, a serious sense of style alongside some cleverly built devices and dialogue. A great title to kick off a writing career and I wonder how much further Christina will be able to go. The only question is how much more complex is our heroines life going to get with the twists that have been left open to be resolved? I guess we'll have to wait to find out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast paced page turner........ 8 Jan 2011
By sharon TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is the first novel in a new series.

I would rate this as a guanteed read, I was glued from the first page. It flows, the story twists & turns & you are right there with the main character Maddy throughout, who through no fault of her own, is a Soul Collector - when her mother died she automatically had to take over & grew into her wings, dodging social services with only a Gargoyle for companionship & protection from the age of thirteen - Maddy is defensive, opinionated, not afraid to stand her ground with her annoying bureaucratic boss, she takes her job seriously, and you get the impression she's really quite lonely.
Money is becoming tight and even though she has a sense of unease she agrees to rent her bottom apartment to enigmatic Gabriel Angelescuro, from here it is hold on to your hat, as the drama unfolds, conflicts flow, battles abound Maddy finds she has vicious enemiess, a minefield of rules & regulations to adhere to souls to save & Demons to defeat.
It is not very often you find so many supporting characters that are so well rounded and exciting to read. I enjoyed the whole book, Christina Henry's world is well knitted, complex & a joy to read. The romance was secondry for me, it was the storyline & world the author had built that made this urban fantasy special.

Reminds me of Kalayna Price, Tracy O'Hara & Dianne Sylvan

The next book in the series is called Black Night & that is due out in July 2011.

1.0 out of 5 stars Such a disappointment 25 May 2013
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
As a huge fan of this genre, I always relish storylines with Angels and Demons. So when I read the back cover for this book I thought I was in for a big treat...however...nothing could have been more disappointing! A weak storyline, weak characterisation and dialogue that made me continually roll my eyes and stop reading.

It's every cliche rolled into one as the main character Madeline Black discovers who she really is and falls for someone forbidden in the process. I'm not saying you have to be completely original but it's all in the writing and this did not deliver. I had to force myself to read on because I had no emotional connection to the characters and just wanted to see how the author herself got to the end of the book.

I really hate writing bad reviews because I know the business of writing is extremely challenging, not to mention the fact that you can't please everyone. However, this is a series I won't be following and it's a shame because I want to read new material all the time!

2.0 out of 5 stars not good
Think of everything that you have read in a fantasy book and compose a tick list. Use it to write a book and this is what you have. Nothing original that I can see. Read more

Sometimes it moved a bit too fast for me and was slightly predictable. Would have loved it to be stretched out a bit, but the characters were good.

Its a fairly well written book but the storyline is pretty dull and the characters are fairly uninteresting. Not a bad book but not a great one either.
