In Dirty Game, Annie Bailey was an East End Madam. In Black Widow she’s queen of the gangs and trying to save her daughter’s life…

Annie Bailey had done it all; Madam, mistress and Gangster's moll. Now she's Annie Carter, and she taking over the East End.

Annie knew that it wouldn't last. Everything was going so well; she was living in Majorca, had Max Carter - the head of the Carter firm by her side, and had given him a beautiful daughter, Layla. But if there was one thing life had taught her, it was that everything could change in the blink of an eye. One minute she's lying by the pool, the next she's out cold. When she comes round Max and Layla are gone.

It's not long before she gets the demands. They want money or she'll be getting her little girl back in pieces…

There's only one thing Annie can do, she heads back to the East End of London and gathers the Carter firm together. Someone has snatched her husband and child. Now there's a score to settle, and it's being settled Annie Carter style…

Praise for Dirty Game:

‘A cracking story from a great new writer’ Mandasue Heller

From the Author

When did you start writing?
As soon as I could crawl. I drew little figures with balloons floating above their heads, and stuffed the balloons full of words – mostly rubbish words, but it was a start. I then progressed to throwing big words I didn’t understand into any sentence I wrote – ‘mutation’ was a favorite. My English teacher concluded that I was either a talented writer, or slightly disturbed.

Where do you write?
At home, in a tiny corner under the eaves, or in the kitchen while cooking - anywhere the mood takes me, really. What are the pros and cons of being a writer? Pros – getting paid for something you are compelled to do and absolutely love to do. Cons – working-alone anxiety and driving yourself crazy over little details you think you’ve missed.

What writers have inspired you?
Shakespeare, Sue Townsend, Lynda La Plante, Dick Francis. How important is a sense of place in your writing? Extremely important. It sets the tone for the whole book. My first book Dirty Game is set in 1960’s East End London, my second Black Widow in 1970 in the same area. That strong sense of place (and time) is essential.

Do you spend a lot of time researching your novels?
Only after the first draft’s written. Then I go back and research and embellish until it’s perfect.

Do your characters ever surprise you?
Not too often. I’m the referee, they’re the players – I’m there to keep them in order.

How much of your life and the people around you do you put into your books?
Very little. I have a wildly vivid imagination!

How did it feel when you saw your book in print for the first time? Deeply weird, and very delightful. If you weren’t a writer, what would you be doing now? I’d either be in a proper job, or banged up, but I guarantee that I’d still be scribbling away and trying to get those scribbles published!

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't wait for the next one.... 19 Aug 2009
By Best Crime Books TOP 100 REVIEWER
This second book in the follow up from book 1 (Dirty Game), starts out in Spain with Max and Annie living the perfectly quiet life with their daughter Layla. Annie Bailey is now Mrs Annie Carter and she loves her life as a happily married woman. Max' brother Jonjo is also there and they are all enjoying the sun until everything goes blank for Annie. When she comes round there is no sign of Max, Jonjo is dead and her daughter missing. Armed with nothing but her determination and her passport, a phone call sends her on a plane and back to London. She resorts to staying with her good friend Dolly who runs a brothel to try and work out the mess she is in. Staying there is a dangerous game as it is also in the middle of the Delaney's patch. With the Delaney's being the Carters enemy and arch rival Annie has to carve out her own niche with her husbands firm. Annie has to gain respect from all the boys on the firm to stand a chance at getting her daughter back. Will she be able to, or is it already too late?

Jessie Keane has created a book with characters that you end up loving and loathing in equal measures. I found that the book was so easy to read and follow. The plots were all linked together without being too intricate and it was a very exciting read from start to finish. The opening few chapters are explosive. We pick up from where the previous book left off and this book left me wanting to find out what happens next for Annie Carter. This was certainly left with room for more and that's exactly what I am now waiting for. Am eagerly anticipating her third book and would highly recommend Jessie Keane. If you are a Martina Cole, Mandasue Heller or June Hampson fan this is something you will love.

Received this book and couldnt put it down until I had finished it. I loved that it was continuing from her last novel which was totally unexpected. I am a huge fan of Martina Cole and have even read all of Mandasue Hellers books BUT these are much better. I cant wait to read her next book out in September. I'm recommending to all my friends - will I get commission from Amazon I wonder??? mmmmm
