Book Description

Lethal, sexy, and always ready to protect her friends, Gin Blanco (a.k.a. the Spider) takes on the mysterious M.M. Monroe in book twelve of the New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling Elemental Assassin urban fantasy series.

There’s nothing worse than a cruel, cunning enemy with time to kill—and my murder to plan. With wicked Fire elemental Mab Monroe long gone, you’d think I could finally catch a break. But someone’s always trying to take me down, either as Gin Blanco or my assassin alter-ago. Now along comes the Spider’s new arch-nemesis, the mysteriously named M. M. Monroe, who is gleefully working overtime to trap me in a sticky web of deceit.

The thing is, I’m not the only target. I can see through the tangled threads enough to know that every bit of bad luck my friends have been having lately is no accident—and that each unfortunate “coincidence” is just one more arrow drawing ever closer to hitting the real bull’s-eye. Though new to Ashland, this M. M. Monroe is no stranger to irony, trying to get me, an assassin, framed for murder. Yet, as my enemy’s master plan is slowly revealed, I have a sinking feeling that it will take more than my powerful Ice and Stone magic to stop my whole life from going up in flames.

5.0 out of 5 stars Black Widow 25 Nov. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Someone’s always trying to take Gin Blanco down, but this M. M. Monroe is working overtime to trap her and all her friends in a sticky web of deceit and it’s going to take more than her elemental ice and stone magic to keep everyone alive in this thrilling urban fantasy.

There is never a dull moment in this fast paced and smooth flowing plot full of action, suspense and a touch of romance. Gin and Owen’s relationship is still going strong and their passions still burn hot but this time the romance may be over for good if M. M. Monroe has her way and destroys everyone and everything Gin loves. The reader can’t help but get caught up in all the non-stop excitement as Gin’s newest enemy’s plans go into effect and Gin is caught unprepared for this kind of attack. Anticipation and tension builds throughout the story as the well written scenes and details paints vivid images of the action as corrupt officials, a bull pen of death, and fire are enough take any one down even my favorite kick ass assassin but that isn’t even the tip of the iceberg in this thrilling story as Gin and her friends go up against an enemy that may be stronger than Mab was.

The fascinating series just keeps getting better and better and the intriguing and wonderful characters always ensure that every reader has a great time when they visit the world of the Elemental Assassin. The well orchestrated suspense draws the reader into the story and makes sure that the reader has to know everything that happens including me as there was no way I could put this book down once I started reading it and the magical battle between M. M. Monroe and the Spider totally rocks and I can’t wait for the next book.

4.0 out of 5 stars The death of the Spider? 30 Jan. 2015
By Cheryl M-M TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition
Mab Monroe's daughter has set her sights on the annihilation of Gin Blanco. The goal is to become the new top dog in town and to do that she has to rid herself of her biggest threat. What event is most likely to convince all the thugs, drug barons and criminals of her strength? Madeline is ruthless and well-connected, but is that enough to destroy Gin and her friends?

Estep has tried to replace Gin's nemesis, which is fair enough seeing as there has been a bit of vacancy for the position. However I don't think replacing her with a pseudo Mab was the right way to go. It would be hard to replicate that special brand of hatred that existed between Mab and Gin. It was personal and fed from the core of their souls.

Madeline and her sidekick don't quite meet the standard, although her elemental power and strength are quite impressive. It just feels as if the series is taking a step back instead of forward. Personally I enjoyed The Spider quite a lot.
In Poison Promise (#11) Estep made a large step towards becoming a shoe-in for the overseer for the underworld. Perhaps that needs exploring a little more. All in all this was a wee bit tepid for an Estep. Hardly any bloodshed, violence, heartbreak or pain and Gin was a watered down version of herself. Let's hope she gets a bit of her bite back in Spider's Trap (#13).
I received a copy of this book via Edelweiss.

What can you say, this series keeps getting better and better. The spider and her companions, have their work cut out for them in this book when it's the villain M M Monroe who starts catching Gin and everyone she cares about in her web masterfully turning the tables on the spider who will need more than skill to survive.

5.0 out of 5 stars eeeeeee 25 Nov. 2014

Have I ever mentioned before how much I love Jennifer Estep books? Mythos Academy was the first set of books I read, and I didn't discover them until the last book was out as I was intrigued by it's synopsis and agreed to review it, then read all of the other books in one go! Theeeenn obviously I just had to read this series!

So this is book 12 so I'm not going to get in too much depth with this as we know the characters and the world, and love both and so on.

When there's 12 books in a series there's always a risk things are going to get repetitive, but Black Widow was full of surprises, and unexpected events...shall we say? Each book continues to have more unexpected twists than the others and no two books are alike too much. The characters and the plots always astound and I trust Estep completely to totally wow me! She's never let me down!

The action scenes where on point (sorry, it's a phrase that has wormed it's way in to my vocabulary!) and the Spider was just fantastic. I know a lot of people where very worried after reading Poison Promise, but honestly guys, you have nothing to worry about, you're gonna love this and it's totally unexpected.

Gin's life has now changed, and it's just made me more excited for the next book and to see what's going to happen next, where it's going and so on, I don't think I'll ever get bored of Estep's books let alone this particular series, and I'm going to be so sad when it's over!

4.5 stars--BLACK WIDOW is the twelve full length storyline in Jennifer Estep’s contemporary, adult Elemental Assassin urban fantasy series focusing on the elemental assassin Gin Blanco aka The Spider. With her dual elements of stone and ice, Gin is a force unto herself but a new enemy with a familiar name and face has come back to Ashland seeking the ultimate revenge. Not only is Gin targeted for destruction, so too are everyone she knows and loves-and this time the Pork Pit is a target as well.

Told from first person point of view (Gin Blanco) BLACK WIDOW finds Gin and her extended family of vampires, dwarves and elementals facing a series of legal action brought about by local law enforcement. From law suits for fraud to health inspections that go terribly wrong, no one is protected when the people in control are no longer in control themselves. As if back from the grave, Mabs Monroe power reaches far and wide, and it comes with a more powerful and startling elemental.

We will reconnect with all of Gin’s family including her lover Owen whose need to protect Gin builds with every storyline. I hope to see something more from Owen and Gin in the future (perhaps I was the only one who caught a small hint). Gin’s foster brother Finn and sister Bria, as well as Jo Jo and Sophia continue to support and aid Gin in her endeavor to control the underground of Ashland but the powerful mob grows stronger with each new leader and elemental control. Gin’s new assistant Silvio is a definite asset when it comes to the inside workings of the law.

The world building continues as the giants, dwarves and other elementals focus their energy and revenge against the woman known as The Spider. Old enemies will resurface and take a stand against Gin all in the name of revenge.
