Product Description

Now that you’ve bought that amazing new DSLR, you need a book that goes beyond the camera manual to capture stunning images. For digital photographers interested in black and white, this guide will help beginning- and intermediate-level shooters conquer the fundamentals and take amazing shots.

Pro photographer John Batdorff starts with the basics, including composition, light, contrast, exposure, and when to choose black and white. He covers all the key camera features (regardless of what type of DSLR you have) that affect your image, including the shutter speed’s ability to freeze and convey motion, and the aperture’s direct correlation with depth of field.

Once you’ve captured those great shots, John takes you step by step through the color conversion process to black and white in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom using simple presets. He also covers the enhancements and features that can be added using Nik Silver Efex Pro software–from presets to control points using U-Point Technology.

Follow along with your friendly and knowledgeable guide and you will:

  • Learn to see in black and white by understanding contrast, texture, and lighting
  • Understand all the best tricks and techniques for getting great black and white action shots, landscapes, and portraits
  • Create your own digital workflow by understanding the basics of post processing in Lightroom, then go beyond the basics with Nik Silver Efex Pro
  • Share your images and learn tips on printing and presenting your work online
  • And once you've got the shot, show it off! Join the book's Flickr group, share your photos, and discuss how you use your camera to get great black and white shots at flickr.com/groups/blackandwhite fromsnapshotstogreatshots.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read, but... 22 Sep 2011
    By Willem
    Format:Paperback
I really liked this book on B&W photography despite the fact that it relies quite heavily on post-processing. Having said that, most B&W photos these days are taken with digital cameras, so if you want to create a B&W portfolio you will have to rely on photo editing software.
The downside is that the book relies on the photographer's access to two B&W tools: Adobe Lightroom and Silver Efex 2. If you do own these tools, then this book shows in detail how you can achieve great B&W images with them. If you don't, it might convince you that you have to spend even more money if you want to create great B&W images.

Having said that, a third of the book focuses on composition and exposure, so even if you use other B&W conversion tools, there is still some value. However, there are better books on just exposure and composition so if you'd want to learn more about those topics, you might want to consider some other books.

As is clear from the above, it's the post-processing information that makes this book a good source of information and for someone interested in B&W photography and who has access to the software, it's a nice all-in-one package.

5.0 out of 5 stars great for monochrome 5 Aug 2012
    Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a very good book for monochrome but, only if you have Silver efex 2 software, and better still if you use lightroom as well.it explains in good detail the interface of silver efex 2,and then about using the various tools and sliders to get fantastic black and white photos, it starts out explaining how too see in black and white, and takes you through too printing, doing your own, using a print house, framing and sharing your photos, but like i said at the start, it is no good if you dont have the above software as it doesn't cover coverting too black and white in photoshop, or, elements etc.
