Product Description

Product Description

Don Camsell joined the men in black of the SBS in 1974. From the deserts of Oman to the hills of Port Stanley, from the bottom of Gibraltar harbour to the deep, cold, black waters of Loch Long and from the QE2 to the back alleys of Belfast, his new role demanded that Don fought in just about every theatre of war - overt or covert.

From the Back Cover

We moved all the way down the Russian destroyer until the silhouettes of the long prop shafts could be seen clearly. It was at this point that we had the fright of out lives: a small boat had been patrolling the area around the cruiser; we heard the tell-tale splash of swimmers entering the water...

I really enjoyed this book. The anecdotes are all real, no glamorising here, written by someone who obviously loved his job. The sentiments too smack of truth, and if you are interested in understanding how the Royal Marines are able to develop and maintain such incredibly high standards then this book provides the answers. It becomes obvious that these specialist operatives have, above all, a comprehensive understanding of people and are able to bring the best out of them through their tremendously interesting training methods, along with a fascinating history of vast experience. The Royal Marines are a class of their own, and we should look up to them as an inspiration to young people the world over. There is no machismo here, no warmongering, rather an honest and simple autobiography by a man who clearly was proud of his work and those he served with.
I bought this book because I am interested in the way an organisation such as the SBS develops and adapts it's techniques, and also for the stories of missions and campaigns that are no longer sensitive.

sas envy 25 Jan 2010
Format:Paperback
It was an interesting read that would of been better without the desperate attempts at all times to convey to the reader that the sbs is so much better than sas, it became tiresome and just made you think the authur suffered from sas envey.

Abandon Ship! 19 Jun 2003
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Without doubt Don Camsell has led a dangerous and exciting life within the Special Boat Service. However, his book suffers from an unfortunate aspect of the genre. It is used repeatedly as a platform to voice critical observations of the SBS's counterparts, the SAS. Whilst from the Author's viewpoint this might be justified and indeed has been echoed in other similar books, it becomes a little wearing for the Reader.

In places, much operational detail appears to have been omitted. No doubt this is for reasons of security, nevertheless on occasion it makes the narrative a little thin, particularly when compared to other biographies on the same subject. The Ministry of Defence is credited for their co-operation in the production of the book, hence one has to wonder how much was left out at their request.

Black Water as a whole left a feeling of being disjointed and spare on detail at critical phases.

Author was a attached marine to SBS not actualy SBS! hence the issues
Author was a attached rank living of others `dits' by all accounts.Hence i think some of the lacking detail and constant SF group harassment! probably bitter he never made it.

Sad isn't it!
It's sad that an obviously dedicated marine with a great story to tell should find it necessary to spend a good portion of what could be a very interesting book by slagging off... Read more

Whilst you want these guys to do their 'thing' & let us all sleep safely etc, don't let their readers near a computer - or at least show them the spell-check function beforehand

Black Water: by Strength and by Guile
Not a bad read if you are interested in the special forces. Sometimes it is a bit dissapointing in that the author keeps refering to the rivalry betwewen the SAS and the SBS. Read more
