Stil the best general reader's history of the Regiment 28 Sep 2010
By wasp - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is still the best general reader's history of the Regiment. Obviously the book does not cover the final years of the Regiment's independent existence and its meritorious service in Iraq before becoming part of the Royal Regiment of Scotland in 2006. However, the essence of the Black Watch story is its imperial service in America, India and Africa, the epic battles against the French in Europe and in the two world wars of the 20th century when thousands of me fought- and died in the Black Watch battalions. These are admirably evoked in a fluent, intimate account by Eric Linklater, the distinguished Scottish author who served in the Regiment as a very young man. Linklater and his son Andro, who saw the book to publication after his father died, give a strong sense of the family-like esprit de corps in the Black Watch. It is not however a hagiography. The regiment's less happy episodes are also examined in an even-handed, humane manner. Handsomely produced and illustrated. Long out of print, it is worth getting hold of while copies can still be found. Highly recommended.
