Product Description

Product Description
This biography of Thomas Arnold combines a study of his life with an examination of Arnold's influence as an educator, a theologian and a churchman. He stands as a monument to the development of the 19th century public school system whose influence spread far beyond Britain's upper-class. Arnold was the celebrated headmaster of Rugby School and Hughes' "Tom Brown's Schooldays" (1857) fixed him in the public imagination. Copley assesses both the uncritical Victorian versions of Arnold`s life - including Hughes and Dean Stanley's original "Life" - and the sneering assessment of his influence, perpetuated by Strachey in his book "Eminent Victorians", to provide a rounded portrait of Arnold. In conclusion Copley explores the possible legacy that this great, but neglected figure, has left to our age.

5.0 out of 5 stars An " Eminent Victorian" - But what can he teach us?, 25 Jun 2005
By Andrew Millar (Aylesbury) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Black Tom (Paperback)
Many of us think we know Dr Thomas Arnold of Rugby School: rugby, muscular Christianity, Tom Brown's Schooldays, cold showers, Stephen Fry's recent television portrayal....

Copley aims to analyse the real Arnold and offer a balanced analysis. He surveys Arnold's life and then his contributions both to education and to theology. What emerges is a real teacher - a man of high ideals, which he began to put in place before his sudden death, but also a fallible, human teacher, who makes rash decisions. The section on Arnold's theology is perhaps more specialised in appeal, but fascinating nonetheless.

Another "must read" for those interested in the history and philosophy of education, particularly spiritual and moral development.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unusual man, great book, 25 May 2003

(REAL NAME)
This is a well-written book about an interesting and important individual. It is mandatory reading for anyone interested in the history of education -- or who enjoys biography. I much enjoyed and would like to thank the author for writing it.
