5.0 out of 5 stars Intelligent, meaningful, soulful 8 Jan 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This is one album that I can truly say has mos def-inetly changed my perception of hip hop. To be totally honest, Common, Mos-def and Talib Kweli are the main artist that actually got me listening, and what I've heard has become apart of the way I think about life. My favourite tracks are Brown skin lady and Thieves In The Night. The lyrics in Thieves in the night really got me, because its true, meanigful and intelligent. I mean come on!! A lot of peeps are " chasing after death just to call themselves brave", which a lot of other rappers promote whilst these guys want people to recognise! I LOVE this album 100%.

5.0 out of 5 stars Masterful Hip-hop 8 Mar 2004
Format:Audio CD
This is a hip-hop classic. Mos Def provides genius lyrics to an equal, if not greater, standard than his solo album (Black on both sides)whilst Talib Kwali contributes rhyming classics with quality delivery. 1, 2, 3, Mos Def and Talib Kwali...!!! Any hip-hop fan without this album or without the intention to buy should just give up and start listening Country. If you don't like this album the first time round then listen to it again...and again. For real.

5.0 out of 5 stars A truly great album 7 Jun 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This album is like a breath of fresh air for someone used to all the meaningless and boring hip-hop out there. The rhymes are intelligent and flow perfectly and also fit the beats seamlessly. Mos Def and Talib Kweli are a perfect partnership, particularly evident on the wonderful 'Thieves in the night' -"you're not strong, only agressive, cos the camera will survey, most of the things that you think, do, or say, you're chasin death just to call yourselves brave, and hide like thieves from life" -which takes as its starting point a paraphrase from Toni Morrison's 'The bluest eye'. With albums like this, we see that hip hop as a mature, musical and fresh art form has come of age.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure hip-hop 16 Dec 2002
Format:Audio CD
This piece by talib kweli and mos def is hip-hop at its core. They move away form the bling bling culture that we hear so often nowadays and rhyme about what they know, subjects like growing up in urban areas and the song 'b-boys wil b-boys' is a clear indication of their rise top the top. Rawcus records are famous for putting across relaxed rhyming over the top of some mellow beats from dj's like hi-tek. They certainly haven't failed with this album by two of their greatest rappers. The real element that makes this album a true hip-hop classic is that they don't try to hard to impress and why should they need to? Talib and Mos Def's true talent shines through on this, one of the best hip-hop albums ever made. Every song is a classic and 'Black Star' is truly up there with 'The Train Of Thought by Reflection Eternal and Illmatic by Nas'. If you truly love hip-hop this needs to be part of your collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars A star by any other name 29 Dec 1999
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
What an excellent album this is. After the tight but ultimately depressing mood cast by the Wu-Tang, and the shallow commercialism epitomised by Puff Daddy and Mase, this is exactly what Hip-Hop needed. To those who criticise Def and Kwali for being "knowingly intelligent" i say f*** off, rap doesn't have to be about bitches and drive bys, the rhymes on this album are concious and witty, in a way we haven't seen since the good days of the Tribe.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost classic 26 Dec 2002
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
If this was the source it'd have 4.5 mics from me
After hearing rave reviews from both these unique emcees it is great to see they collaborated on this album. Songs such as "Respiration" and "Definition are classic", if only all the tracks were like this. The only thing i felt let the album down was Talib himself, he was outshined slightly by Mos def, and at times he doesn't fit the beat and his flow suffers.
But don't let that put you off
Thisis what i would call hip hop, its refreshing topics and excellent emceeing skills that have your mind aired and lifted.
and can take your breath away fi yuo fully appriciate how much talent it takes to create lyrics like shown on this and presence.
and if you're a true hiphop fan you'd already have this in your collection and if you don't, you'd better get it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The finest album of the last decade. 20 May 2002
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
One of the best albums ever made. Mos Def and Kweli put more emotion into their lyrics than any other emcees, and this is shown on 'Thieves in the night' and 'Respiration'. The production is simply the best, Hi-teks finest work, and is a pleasure to listen too. The cover of Slick Rick's 'Children's Story' is amazing, with Mos Def showing off his storytelling skills which are just as good as the masters (slick rick). Kweli's relaxed style works amazingly well with the complex rhymes he is saying, and this throws you somewhat. The guests which feature are of extremely high quality (common, vinia mojica etc...) and just complement the songs more. Highlights are everything. If you do not own this, buy it and listen to how real hip hop should be.

Most of the hip hop community are familiar with the seemingly endless talents of Mos Def and the critically acclaimed Reflection eternal, so it's about time Black Star, the original Rawkus Full length attempt from Mos and Kwa, was recognised for classics like "Definition", "Respiration" feat. Common, and "Thieves in the night" check this out NOW! A hip hop classi that you hould already have in your collection.
