Rae is a drug addled teenage nymphomaniac, whose national guardsman boyfriend Ronnie has just shipped off to war leaving Rae to look to the local boys for satisfaction. After a rough encounter with one of Ronnie's buddies, she ends up half-naked beaten and bloody lying in the middle of the road in front of Lazarus' house.
Lazarus, an ageing Tennessee farmer and retired blues guitarist who's filled with bitterness after his wife leaves him for his younger brother. Lazarus picks Rae up, takes her inside, and takes it upon himself to nurse her back to health and cure her of her demons. Oh, and he attaches her to a fifty-pound steel chain so she can't escape.
Despite its slightly strange storyline, this is an absolute corker of a film. Samuel Jackson is superb as Lazarus and this is easily the best thing he's done in years. He nails the character's bitterness and rage perfectly, while also capturing a good mans damaged faith and empty heart. Cristina Ricci is also fantastic as Rae, a deeply damaged individual who in Lazarus finds just what she needs, a strong positive father figure.
Director Craig Brewer does a fine job and cleverly keeps the sexual tension between the two main characters in check, releasing just enough to keep the story interesting and believable. Beautifully directed, acted with a great storyline, dialogue and a powerful blues score, this is definitely one to see. If you enjoy this you should check out the equally good Plain Dirty

"Black Snake Moan", much like the recent "Bridge to Terabithia", is one of the many victims of a misleading advertising campaign. The movie has been marketed as some sort of depraved sex story akin to a teenager's wet dream. However, "Black Snake Moan" is not such an exploitative motion picture as posters and trailers might suggest. Instead it's a story about two people who form a close bond by whatever means, discovering equality and understanding between each other even as they continue to make questionable decisions the other might not like. More a character study than a sleazy teen boob-movie, "Black Snake Moan" is instead a deeper, more meaningful movie that's more valuable than the movie it has been marketed as.

Much different to previous roles in "Snakes on a Plane" and "Cursed" respectively, Samuel L. Jackson and Christina Ricci take on the parts of lead characters Lazarus and Rae. Lazarus' marriage to his younger wife has recently collapsed, thus causing the god-fearing man to exclude friends and family as his embarassment over his unceremonious split tears him apart. When a battered nymphomaniac named Rae turns up unconscious on the road outside his house, Lazarus carries her inside and begins giving her medicine and water until she regains her health. During her delusional waking instances (each lasting only a few minutes) it becomes clear to Lazarus that Rae is a sex-addicted soul that he believes needs healing of her 'wickedness'. Rae awakes to find herself chained to the radiator, with Lazarus refusing to release her until she is cured. Bizarrely enough, it is these developments that eventually lead to the two forming a mutual understanding and a sympathetic relationship that both have longed for.

Christina Ricci and Samuel L.

Found out about this film whilst watching a american online show with the black keys performing where they mentioned one of their songs was used in the trailer and the movie. From there checked out the trailer and look really bizzare, half humour half drama and some superb actors in it. Samuel L Jackson, Christina Ricci and even Justin Timberlake. From start to finish this film moves with you with the fine performances, deals with some complex issues including sexual addiction, possession, adultery, an extreme anxiety condition, race and religion and all whilst being soundtracked by some amazing blues music by The Black Keys amongst others and there is one incredible scene where Samuel is playing and singing the blues like he'd been born to do it!!!

Fact: He learnt guitar for this film, this happened after he was given a guitar as a giveaway at a previous event then someone approached him and suggested that he really should try and find a script where he could play a blues player/singer. He learnt guitar while he was filming snakes on a plane i believe (can't remember for sure, but think that is the case).

The soundtrack is awesome too Black Snake Moan and also Black Keys are well worth checking out. These are my favourite albums from them: Brothers Attack & Release and

I stumbled across this quite by accident when it aired recently on Film 4. As others have commented the distributors clearly thought they had to market the film in a certain way to find 'an audience' and in my opinion grossly mis-sold it. Its a story of damaged souls finding redemption and healing, all set in the deep south with an awesome Blues soundtrack. Samuel L Jackson, gives a superb performance, and shows he can sing a bit as well, and Cristina Ricci gives a performance unlike any other I have seen from her. I loved this movie, its look its story and its music, hence buying the DVD release after watching it on the TV. The CD of the soundtrack isn't bad either, if you like the whole Blues vibe, you cannot help but enjoy it.
