What a disappointment. Not the book obviously, just the opportunity to have scared the life out of my companions this time last week.
I'll rewind, each year we go away on a boy's weekend. So where did we choose this year..... The Watch House on Blakeney point. It's whilst we are there that one of the lads mentioned a book, loaned to him about Black Shuck and the Watch House. So, when I get home I buy this book and read it over 2 days.
Well bless me. If it wasn't a perfect description of the area and the house itself. So I speak to the boys and highlight some of the book's passages. I happened to be sleeping in bedroom number 3, one of the boys in the lookout etc. We arrived by boat, we walked the shingle, we went to the Point and we saw many dead seabirds and a small dead pup!
Now imagine how we laughed at the time with one of the blokes (early 30's) went out for a wee (the toilet is correctly called "a loo with a view") and ran in claiming he got scared by seeing "a bear stood by a bush looking at me." How we laughed......

Now read this book, hire the Watch House and remember that line....."I thought i saw a bear by the bush, when I shone a light on it I realised it was not just a bush in the dark but like a bear stood next to it."

A gripping plot with great central characters - Black Shuck scares from the beginning. I recommend this to everyone who loves good writing and who loves to be frightened out of their wits!!

Well... I couldn't put the book down and read it from cover to cover in a day. The descriptions within the book as to the location are amazingly detailed and brilliantly described, creating a solid mental image of where the characters are based. I love how the book has the element of a ghost story but doesn't have to rely on it to make it a compelling read. The writing is wonderful, sparse and precise. Mr Warren doesn't use a dozen words where one will do and I really admire him for this
It shows the lead character metamorphosis gradually from insecure person whose faced a rough phase in his life caught up in all the hype of his own problems to transcend into the actual reality of what he begins to face, the acceptance of situations which incompass not only reality but the supernatural as well as he realises he has to fight for not only his life and sanity but for those he has come to care for. This book plays on fear, human fear, fear of being alone and the fear when you realise you're not.
