A really thought provoking but yes, a bit strange, book. I havn't read other translations from the original Spanish but I did find the translation a little 'literal' and maybe lacking passion. Well recommended all the same though.

The black sheep and other fables was first published in Mexico and has since become a classic throughout the Spanish-speaking world.

The monkey who wanted to be a satirist, the frog who wanted to be an authentic frog, the lightning that struck twice... These are fables with morals certainly but morals, according to Monterroso, should not be explicit.

'To say that a grasshopper should work like an ant, is a piece of foolishness perpetuated through centuries. The grasshopper won't change. In any case it is the ant who should change.'



The book itself is slightly smaller than normal and has less than 100 pages, the stories are short, there are 40 of them and one is two lines long but that is probably my favorite it makes me laugh every time. These stories are so good that I am learning Spanish so I can read more of his book, its really difficult to find then in English and I would also like to read this book before it was translated.
