Amazon.co.uk Review

Viewed objectively, sheep aren't all that scary. They're actually quite cute and fluffy. But Black Sheep achieves the almost impossible by making you believe, at least for 90 minutes, that they could really turn into unstoppable killing machines. When a sheep-phobic ends up back on his family's farm to discuss his father's estate with his tyrannical brother, a pair of bumbling eco-warriors accidentally unleashes his worst nightmare--a flock of mutated sheep, hungry for human flesh.

Pitched perfectly between horror and comedy, Black Sheep fits neatly into the tradition of genre classics like Shaun of the Dead and American Werewolf in London. It's funny without either being cruel or becoming tediously post-modern, scary without being sadistic. New Zealand's rolling green hills make a stunning and rather incongruous backdrop for the bloodbath--and the prosthetics and special effects look fantastic, packing a visceral punch that CGI could never hope to match. Director Jonathan King paces the laughs and scares expertly; there's not a minute wasted in Black Sheep's runtime, and not a minute that isn't ridiculously enjoyable. Who'd have thought zombie sheep could be so much fun? --Sarah Dobbs

Synopsis

This blood-soaked horror comedy is the story of Henry Oldfield (Nathan Meister), a New Zealander with an unfortunate phobia...of sheep. When Henry was a boy, his father was killed in a herding accident on the land, and Henry fled to the big city. Now, years later, he has returned to sell his half of the farm and--at the behest of his therapist--to face his fears. Meanwhile, Henry's sadistic older brother Angus (Peter Feeney) has taken over the family business, and become widely known for his controversial genetic experiments on the animals. When two animal activists release one of Angus's genetically-altered lambs, Henry's trip quickly turns into his worst nightmare, as the lamb's zombie-like bite turns sheep and people into vicious flesh-eaters. Henry joins forces with one of the animal activists (Danielle Mason), and together they try to escape the sheep and find an antidote for the virus. Director Jonathon King cleverly plays on the silliness of the normally docile, dimwitted lamb as terrifying monster, and his shots of the sheep swarming over the hills induce equal parts thrills and laughter. However, the storyline could perhaps have benefited from a bit less action, and a bit more plot, as the suspense and jokes begin to fizzle by the end. The excellent WETA WORKSHOP (known for its work on the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy) delivers hilariously gory special effects. Faces are eaten off, humans throw their own limbs, and heads explode, culminating in a raucous bloodbath that will likely earn BLACK SHEEP cult status among the EVIL DEAD crowd.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really good dark comedy, 28 Dec 2007
By SHANN "SHANN" (England, London) - See all my reviews
What this film demonstrates is that talent will always make up for a low budget. In a way it reminded me of the early red dwarf series. There was clearly a chemistry between the cast and a hilariously dark humour throughout. I never thought I would be reviewing a film about zombie sheep but it is brilliant. The writing is superb, the acting on the money and what the film does best is that it knows its limitations and plays to its strengths. Since watching this film I have never looked at a sheep in the same way!! I definitely think its worth buying and would recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The sheeps' finest hour!, 16 Oct 2008
By Mr B (Welsh Borders) - See all my reviews
Given the almost overwhelming amount of total rubbish being pumped out in the film world, I found Black Sheep to be a refreshing comedy "zombie" thriller. Whilst touching on a more serious underlying message. The New Zealand setting and presumably writing had me drawing simularitirs with Peter Jacksons' Bad taste in its low-fi style and humour. With some nicely graphic maimings and deaths along the way. If you like Shaun of the Dead type films, this one is definately worth a look. Cheered up my week day evening no end. In my opinion First Class production and casting given the budget. A happy addition to my ever expanding film collection.

2.0 out of 5 stars The most dissapointing movie of 2007, 31 May 2008
By D. Jackson "DJ" (UK) - See all my reviews

People, don't get excited, Black Sheep is not what it's cracked up to be.

A killer sheep movie... just how often do these come up? Luckily, Black Sheep's premise is good, (The idea of zombie sheep will satisfy the less demanding viewers, however bad the actual film is.) however its premise is just about the only good thing about it! The genius idea of killer sheep has clearly gotten into the wrong hands- and criminally destroyed.

Maybe it was the direction, maybe it was the script, or maybe it was just the movie in general, but something turned this 'horror comedy' into a surprisingly depressing... mess. I guess I was so disappointed because initially, I had no doubts about this movie at all, but Black Sheep fails to deliver in almost every department.

Sure, there are some positives to Black Sheep as apposed to negatives, the characters are a comfortably unusual selection, the gore is OK, and when you see massive balls of fluff (excuse me, sheep) thrown from one side of the screen to the other and a woman trying to beat a sheep to death with her own chewed off leg- the result is excruciatingly humorous.

But after all, when the credits roll, you cannot escape the feeling that the film-makers just haven't tried. I can appreciate that Black Sheep is supposed to be silly, tacky and unrealistic, but there 'is' a line separating hilarious B-movie horrors... and just plain baaad.

A total missed opportunity.
