The Black Sabbath Story: Volume One' runs for just over an hour and provides a small overview of Black Sabbath's early history. Featuring interview segments from Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler who chat about the band and it's progression from album-to-album. However, neither Bill Ward or Ozzy Osbourne are involved at all. And although both Tony and Geezer are able to offer up occasional interesting tid-bits about life on the road and their experiences in Sabbath, this DVD really fails to provide any real in-depth information or insight in the band's history to even the most average of Black Sabbath fans.
Adding insult to injury! The interviews are poorly interspliced with some really shoddy editing and as a result the live footage and rare promo videos really suffer because of it. Spinning images of pentagrams and lightning bolts... the heavy metal clichés are in full swing. However, the live clips do a really good job at showcasing the band's fiery passion as well as documenting their rise and success - moving from the blues-rock clubs to breaking big in America and headlining shows at London's Hammersmith Odeon and unleashing heavy metal!
While the live stuff makes for a cool watch, the whole experience is just too short and really flimsy. As an extra - Original Sabbath manager Jim Simpson gives a 20-minute interview talking about the band in the early days and beyond! Drummer Cosy Powell also says a few words about his experiences with the band too!
But all in all, an average release I'd say, I was pretty disappointed. I wish the guys could get together and collabrate a DVD full of information and footage that could please both old and new fans alike and give a in-depth account on how they began and what they became. Because this DVD falls far too short.
