I have to say that I was expecting a little bit more from The Black Rubber Dress, having been told by a friend that it was much like a Janet Evanovich novel.
Sam Jones is a sculptress with 'attitude' who ends up investigating the murder of a security guard at the unveiling of one of her sculptures. The sculpture was commissioned by a bank in the City and so Sam also end up rubbing shoulders (and other parts of her anatomy!) with a bunch of bratty rich kids.
If you like the actual crime aspect of these kind of novels, you'll be disappointed. The plot is a bit thin and the more interesting parts of the story involve Sam's love life.
I did think that the character of Sam mentioned that she was a 'feisty woman to be reckoned with' so often that I would have rather that she'd spent the time proving it.
The story is Ok, it rattles along quite nicely, but expect
Sex and the City rather than a crime novel.
Ok, just not brilliant.
