Guitari's novels are superb, Ferrara is a really interesting hero and the character, plotting and scenes have a very definite North Italian flavour. I think perhaps the Black Rose is not quite as good as the others but it is still superb.

Once again Michele Giuttari has delivered the goods in his fifth Ferrara novel. I really enjoyed it. He captures the atmosphere of the place as far as I am concerned. A strong storyline kept me gripped with it's references to black magic and freemasonry symbolism. Ferrara is an Italian police officer with whom I can identify. In some ways lighter than the Scandinavian novels of Mankell, Nesbo and others it still can be quite brutal in places, but the characters and landscape are less oppressive. Giuttari, alongside Donna Leon and Camilleri give me great pleasure to read

I agree with other reviewers here, that this book is not the best that Michele Giuttari has written. It is graphic and has a description of a woman having her throat slit and being eviscerated. The references to witchcraft, etc, really put me off and I did not enjoy this book.
