I really do like Jose Gonzalez - a top notch singer / songwriter / musician. Very nice modern folky sound and his Veneer album is superb (and quite reminiscent of Elliot Smith).
Black Refuge is different to Veneer as it features Jose's band, Junip. The sound is great and more expansive than Veneer. Tom Joad is a particularly good track.
My only complaint is the sound quality is rubbish! It sounds like it was recorded too loud, which has left a permanent distortion (this MAY have been deliberate, but I'm not keen on it if this is the case) at all volumes, particularly on the first and last tracks.
That aside, if you like Jose, then you can pass off the sound quality as artistic experimentation, sit back and enjoy more of his Argentinian talent. Only four stars due to the sound - otherwise its another superb offering.

For fans of Jose Gonzalez... 23 Feb 2009

this EP is a great choice. Expanding the sound of his solo work, Junip explores dark and ethereal soundscapes that remain cohesive and memorable. The organ and softly-stated drums full the sonic space surrounding Jose's delicate guitar and vocals with enchanting results. Although it can be hard to find, or a bit expensive for a mere taste of the band (only 5 tracks are included), any Jose Gonzalez collection is incomplete without this beautifully realized project. Highly recommended for anyone looking for something to fulfill a somber, contemplative mood.

As I've said before Junip is a great musical act. Jose Gonzalez is a fine lyricist and performer. The group is a mainstay of Alt-Indie radio

Discovered this first release after having been a Junip fan for a few years. Absolutely love it! The Bruce Sprinstein cover of Searching for Tom Joad is fantastic!
