Product Description

Review

A refreshing blend of fiddle, bullfiddle, haphazard percussion, horns and rockin blues guitar coming to your nearest bordello, bullfight or bar-room brawl real soon. --Guitar Magazine

A hellacious swing that causes dames to sway and dudes to drink! --Big Cheese

The UVM rise above the mere cabaret, by simply being very, very good. --Q Magazine

CD Description

With their lurching sea shanties, debauched murder ballads, messed-up tangos and whiskey-soaked gypsy stomps, some reckon they're from the same stable of stallions as Tom Waits and Nick Cave; others point out the last gang in town swagger of The Clash and the hellbound blues that John Lee Hooker first dragged out of the swamp. Featuring between 7 to 12 musicians playing - guitars, drums, fiddle, trumpet, banjo, washboard, upright bass, gong, mandolin, accordion, harmonicas, saxophone and even empty bottles & tie racks to build their unique Bourbon Soaked Gypsy Blues Bop N Stroll

Great Party Music 31 July 2011
Format:Audio CD
First heard Urban Voodoo Machine on "Loose Ends" (Radio 4 - Saturdays). Immediately Googled the band and found suitable offers on Amazon. Got this; and haven't stopped boogying around the kitchen to it since !! If I were younger it would be my favourite party-livener. But; as I am now 70, I am grateful for the new lease of life. Thankyou "middle-class" Radio 4 - and Amazon, of course !!!!!

Heard these people, improbably, on BBC Radio 4, and was instantly hooked! The leader is, perhaps also improbably, a Norwegian, and there's about a dozen of them altogether. This is not for the faint hearted, of those of a delicate disposition - it's raw, doesn't take itself too seriously, and much of the subject matter is pretty dark really - but somehow it makes you smile! Great driving music. As for the style, well, the nearest I can get is Blues Brothers meets the Pogues, with added deranged gypsy violins. There are nods to bad-ass rock'n'roll, spaghetti westerns, and possibly even the Rocky Horror Picture Show, and I suspect their tongues are firmly in their cheeks musically a lot of the time. They sound like they are having a blast, and the use of lots and lots and lots of real instruments, played with gusto, is invigorating. I'm off to buy their other album too!

Let's do Voodoo 18 July 2011
By pipol
Format:Audio CD
Very refreshingly strange and original - but hard to categorize. Raw, Earthy, bawdy, bluesy, and was that a bit of klezmer?
Great for driving buy it now!
