The Black Queen is an utterly compelling story, brilliantly read in a dramatic and humorous way. All three of my children were transfixed for over an hour in the car (ages 5, 7 and 11) by the tale and have asked to hear it again and again. Great fun for adults too. Highly recommended.

My seven year old loved this book, partly because he is into chess but also because the author manages to build up the suspense around the role of the mysterious Black Queen and her cat. It is written in a way which appeals to adults as well as children - so it's a good one for bedtime stories as long as your child isn't too nervous!
