I have just received this book today and WoW! - what a lovely book. I am not a black power shooter yet, but have a strong interest in rifles and pistols and one reason I purchased this book was to improve my knowledge on the guns to help me pick a rifle; flintlock, percussion, or modern???. Modern is out for me. One thing I will say when you first get this book you will feel you want to wear white gloves to handle it.

So far I don't see that this book will teach me how to shoot the guns but I didn't buy it to do that. It will inspire you if you are into things of old. The illustrations are beautiful. The presentation of the book is well done, with the opening paper quality type being textured giving a real quality feel that is not reflected in the moderate cost of the book.

This book addresses a range of historical levels and has loads of clear pictures of rifles, pistols, horns and knifes. What I like, there is a small box beside each gun picture, which just gives the reader enough historical information about each gun, which for me is great for 2 reasons:
1. It is helpful for me to decide on what gun and caliber I would purchase; with the historical story I can chose
to identify with.
2. I like short bits of information rather that overkill, once I get the bug, then I am happy to go looking for more details so the book works well for me.

This is a book the will grace my coffee table when guess come to visit. It will charm them and will be a great conversation starter. However, this book is not just something to grace your home, it a book that I will enjoy for a life time and pass unto my kids and beyond. I am looking forwards to reading it in detail and allowing it to feed me more and more information as my passion grows. If you are interested in old black powder guns no matter what end of the continuum you are at; novice like me to expert, you must get this book.

Heavily geared to the USA market,it doesn't do what I wanted it for - i.e to compare which replica firearms represent the best value for money in terms of build quality, reliability, accuracy in use. Just a lot of 'pretty pictures' and information on where the manufacturers are located.

Both a coffee table book and a history. 22 Jan. 2010
By John Matlock - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
This book takes up where the authors previous book Black Powder Revolvers - Reproductions & Replicas leaves off. It is a magnificently produced book with lavish illustrations of virtually all guns of this category.

It is interesting that the gun laws in the United States, and perhaps around the world (I really don't know) have made exceptions regarding antique guns or their copies. As such the growth of the black powder industry or sport has shown tremendous growth.

This book is a combination of a coffee table book, where you can just look at the pictures and a research volume that shows the development and history of these new black powder guns.

A must for traditional blackpowder shooters 14 Sept. 2012
By CraigC - Published on Amazon.com

Another wonderful book by Dennis Adler, who has quickly become a favorite author. As usual, the photography is spectacular. With information and photos depicting some of the finest factory and custom blackpowder guns available today. Not just guns but of knives, sheaths, hunting pouches, possibles bags and all the accoutrements. Yes, unfortunately, there is a chapter on modern inline but you can skip right past that.

A recommended pick for any gun collector or library catering to them 17 Mar. 2010
By Midwest Book Review - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
Black Powder Long Arms & Pistols: Reproductions & Replicas is the only reference to cover the range of reproductions since 1959, and offers a sister publication to the 2008 BLACK POWDER REVOLVERS. Hundreds of color photos pack a showcase of recently manufactured makes and models and is a recommended pick for any gun collector or library catering to them.
It's Like a "Wish Book" for Black Powder Enthusiasts 27 Dec. 2013
By Kevin Ladd - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
This was a Christmas Present and I was delighted from the start! Beautiful photography, entertaining text and lots of history! If you are new to the world of black powder and want to know what's available in the way of factory made replicas or custom guns, get this book! There are chapters on powder horns, hunting bags and much more. Adler has done a fine job on this one. (I got a kick out of Dennis decked out in fur cap and leather and holding a long rifle. He looked like character actor Arthur Hunnicutt.) If you are an old hand at black powder you'll still enjoy browsing the pages. I've been shooting these guns for 37 plus years and I was impressed.
photography faux pas 5 Oct. 2014
By cjohnson - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
This is an important book that needed to be made, and overall is beautifully done. I am disappointed, however, that in several places in this work (including a huge folding insert photograph near the middle) the photographs ued are of nowhere near sufficient resolution to be printed in the size used for this book. Several photos appear pixelated and it made this otherwise-fantastic work look very amateur and cheap. This seems to be an error in editing, as i can scarcely imagine anyone purposefully designing an enormous foldout poster print and failing to use a full resolution photo.
