Product Description

Review

'Black Parade (1935) is strong because... it includes the many-sided turbulence, the incoherence and contradictions, which the more available stereotypes of the history exclude. It can be properly contrasted with... Richard Llewellyn's How Green Was My Valley (1939)... widely and properly seen as the export version of the Welsh industrial experience.' --Raymond Williams

About the Author

Jack Jones was born in Merthyr Tydfil in 1884. He left school at twelve to work with his father as a miner. His political engagement saw him act for the Miners Federation; join the Communist Party, then Labour. He stood as Liberal candidate for Neath in 1929. Married with five children, he earned a living through mining, as a platform-speaker, navvy, salesman, assistant cinema-manager and writer. In 1948 he was made a CBE, and in 1968 he was elected first president of the English section of Yr Academi Gymreig.

Format: Paperback
This story on its own would justify the Library of Wales Series. It recounts the saga of a family in Merthyr Tydfil from the late 1800s through to the early decades of the 1900s. It is told with great passion and sympathy for those at the bottom of the heap who are sinking, swimming or even making it ashore.

The story is well told and is not easy to put down. There is also a tremendous amount of social detail which has contributed to moulding modern, south Wales.

A real good read.

This book is out of print and is released by the library of Wales. It goes back to industrial upheaval in the coal and steel industry. It follows the life of an uneducated woman Saran and we follow her through her life. The life of a woman then was so different to now ,thank goodness. Reading it makes you treasure life now.
A little too rambling in style at times.

The history of a Welsh family, with lots of love but little money. Satan is the main character who is portrayed as not very bright but holds the family together with her forgiving ways and thoughtfulness and thoroughness. Lots of factual information and well written story. Would recommend as absorbing, something a bit different. Glad I read it

As a 'Valleys Girl' I avidly turned the pages. Interesting, if not particularly thrilling, with good descriptions.
Life is seen particularly from the point of view of the heroine, although all working class experience is covered in this story which cleverly spans decades.
