Product Description

The Blitz, London 1944. As the Luftwaffe make their last desperate assault on the city, Londoners take to the shelters once again and eagerly await the signal for D-Day. In the East End children lead police to a charred, dismembered corpse buried in a bombsite. The victim is German and it soon becomes clear that this is no ordinary murder. For Russian emigré Detective-Sergeant Troy it is the start of a manhunt which will lead him into a world of military intelligence and corruption in high places; a manhunt in which Troy is both the hunter and the hunted.

London, 1944, and when a dog unearths a human arm, Sergeant Troy of Scotland Yard get embroiled in something deeper and darker than just murder.

This is a difficult book to review as there is much that is good, tempered by a lot of flaws that render it increasingly improbable.

On the positive side, Troy is an interesting character given his background; and the plot of the novel unweaves in unexpected directions. Some of the characters are rendered well (Troy's rather wonderful Polish forensic colleague), while others fall into thriller cliché territory, not least the `villain'.

On the negative side, however, there's a pervasive looseness about the story, and there are various holes in the plot that make it feel like an early draft rather than a finished piece. At points the plot seems to lose its way; and the solution to the murders is so far left field that it made little sense - the fact that the narrative then moves forward from 1944 London to 1948 Berlin meant that the author never had to sort out the tangle of the end which left me feeling very unsatisfied.

So a mixed book for me: I particularly disliked the `with one bound he was free' aspect of the plot with Troy being shot, bombed, beaten up, stabbed, blinded etc. yet getting up off his hospital bed and doggedly pursuing his man regardless.

This is engaging enough as a switch-your-brain-off entertaining read, but I won't be checking out the rest of the series.

Hard to stick with 18 Feb 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I didn't really enjoy this book. I found it difficult to sympathise and relate to the main character and as a result of a lot of his decisions found him to be a rather unlikeable guy. This wouldn't have mattered too much but as the story literally revolves around him I found trudging through the book very hard work. Another thing I hate in books is having very short chapters i.e. Dan Brown and this book, while not as bad as some Dan Brown novels falls into the trap of having over 90 which is a bit crazy considering that there are some with no real scene changes between them. I stuck with it to the end but only because a book would literally have to be in a foreign language for me not to persevere to the end.

Really enjoyed this book, great atmosphere and kept me reading for longer than I should!
Loved the London detail and the story moved along at a good pace. Lots of twists and turns. Would make a great film
