Book Description

1 May 2008
In the last two decades, a bizarre and violent musical subculture called "Black Metal" has emerged in Norway. Its roots stem from a heady blend of horror movies, heavy metal music, Satanism, Paganism, and adolescent angst. In the early-mid 1990s, members of this extremist underground committed murder, burned down medieval wooden churches, and desecrated graveyards. What started as juvenile frenzy came to symbolize the start of a war against Christianity, a return to the worship of the ancient Norse gods, and the complete rejection of mainstream society.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent insight look on the black metal scene 12 Jan 2010
By T. Anna
Format:Hardcover
Bought this book as a present for a musician who has been involved in the genre/scene for more than ten years and was quite happy of getting it, so if the same applies to you, this will be a good addition to your library.
Photographically speaking, most of the shots are either candid pictures taken backstage/during private moments or live photos, though there are several promotional shots that most black metal fans will recognise. Considering the large format of the book and the means used to take the shots (most of them on regular film, not medium format or higher, at the times of course digital photography wasn't standard) some of them may have degraded, but the grittines and grain actually enhances the overall appeal, as well as the inclusion of a fanzine section at the end of the book. There are also several pages dedicated to the whole "satanic mafia" arsons/murders, with news coverage from Uk and local tabloids and music press.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not exactly what I was expecting 17 Jan 2012

Prior to purchase I had not read any of the reviews, nor seen a copy of this book for sale anywhere. It was a blind purchase based on my interest of black metal.

When it arrived I was surprised at the sheer size of the book, it's similar to one of the large art books, it is weighty and feels like a quality book with its glossy thick pages and double spread photos.

If you are buying this book in the hope to read about black metal - don't, this is not for you. This is an art book with some of the most personal and candid photos of the guys that started the black metal movement.

Although you may spend a couple of hours at first flicking through it, it's not the type of book you would pick up on a regular basis. It's something to treasure and look back on over the years. If this sounds for you then I highly recommend buying this to add to your collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awe Inspiring 24 July 2010

Amazing book, have waited for it for many years to be published. Beautiful images and a wonderful size which really does justice to the pictures. Would recommend it not only to those interested in unusual portrait photography, but also metallers who want a deeper understanding of the Black and Extreme metal ethos which encompasses the music. Beste did an amazing job.
