2001 marked the Golden Anniversary of a GOLD Record from an Era when Fifty-thousand 45’s was a BIG Seller. That 500K-selling Single cut the edge of a new style before deejay Alan Freed named it: ROCK & ROLL. Sam Phillips, Sun Studios founder, tagged that Billboard #1 R&B Smash as the very first “Rock & Roll Recording”. Every hell-raiser, hip-shaker, and hit-maker ... Isaac Wister Turner was not what you might call a temperate man. (You can find all the gory details on Wikipedia and for Tina's point of view watch "What's Love Got to Do With It").
But you've got to listen to the music he created. Ike was R&B - Throughout the sixties The Ike & Tina Turner Revue set the standard for live music, a real achievement when you look at their contemporaries.
A Black Man's Soul came out in 1969 and is the sound of a band honed through years on the chitlin circuit. It's got to be one of the most under-valued soul albums ever recorded. Listen to the opening drum solo by Mack Johnson on "Funky Mule" - a timeless breakbeat standard. Billy Preston playing a wicked piano on "Getting Nasty" - (if it sounds familiar, it was sampled by Jurassic 5 on Concrete Schoolyard.)
All in all, A Black Man's Soul is stone-cold funk classic - a must for any soul fan.

Getting Nasty is the bomb track here. 15 Dec 2005

Ike Turner is the Darth Vader of rock and roll. This mostly instrumental album is one of the more funk-focused of Ike's 50-plus year career.

"Getting Nasty" is the bomb - Billy Preston playing piano shortly before going to England to cut "Get Back" with the Beatles. Jurassic 5 has sampled this track. Check Ike out..and Tina is the female voice of true rock and roll.

For the hardcore blues fan 25 April 2013
By Fuego-73 - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This cd is mostly instrumentals from Ike and his Kings of Rhythm. There a few "bonus" tracks that Tina is featured on vocals. (Knock on Wood, No More Doggin', and Drifting Blues) One of the standout songs is Getting Nasty, featuring the late, great Billy Preston on piano. For the hip hop heads out there, "Getting Nasty" was sampled by Large Professor on the song "Just Hangin' Out".
Holy Turner! 19 Feb 2013

Ike and the Kings take a bunch of melodies and flip 'em over like they're digging for loose change under the beat and then they come up with gold! Tell me how anybody else could do that.
